"Kristin Hannah’s potent storytelling skills are brilliantly served by narrator Julia Whelan, whose limber, low-pitched voice moves nimbly from person to person, capturing personality and mood, her empathy palpable."—The Washington Post
From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.
As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.
But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.
The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

What the critics say
"Hannah again shines her light on overlooked women in history"—People Magazine (Book of the Week)
"Hannah is in top form here... Hannah’s real superpower is her ability to hook you along from catastrophe to catastrophe, sometimes peering between your fingers, because you simply cannot give up on her characters. She gathers women into the (Vietnam) experience with moving conviction."—The New York Times
“The Women is historical fiction at its very best. So moving, so wrenching, and yet, in the end, uplifting. Brava! I loved The Nightingale and The Four Winds, but The Women is my favorite.”—Nicholas D. Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning coauthor of Half the Sky

Captivating story highlighting the remarkable women of the Vietnam war
As with all of her stories, the author pulls you into the tale that covers a large stretch of the main characters life. Love the story, the way it was written and read, plus the ample historical references.

An eye opener
This story opened my eyes up to what the women who served in Vietnam went through. Both during the war and when they came home. I thank Kristin Hannah for honouring these women by telling their story.

Absolutely Loved it, and Julia Whalen is so great.
This story was great, love how it tells the stories of women and men that their country would have liked to forget about
as well as still humanizing the Vietnamese people who also suffered dearly and deserve to be remembered as well.
I could listen to Julia Whalen read the dictionary, adored this book. The nightingale still my favourite by Kristin Hannah that I have read, I did read the four winds and did enjoy it but also found it heard to push on when it was so bleak for so long.

Wow. What an amazing story!
We stand on the shoulders of women who broke the mold expected of them and showed to themselves and the world that women are made for more and can be heros too. But, we all need love, belonging as well as purpose. Without all three we end up on a path of self destruction and it's a long journey back to wholeness. But with time, love and remembering we're just human, we can find our way back. Beautifully written and compelling to read. This book will stay with me for a long time.
