"Kristin Hannah’s potent storytelling skills are brilliantly served by narrator Julia Whelan, whose limber, low-pitched voice moves nimbly from person to person, capturing personality and mood, her empathy palpable."—The Washington Post

From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

What the critics say

"Hannah again shines her light on overlooked women in history"—People Magazine (Book of the Week)

"Hannah is in top form here... Hannah’s real superpower is her ability to hook you along from catastrophe to catastrophe, sometimes peering between your fingers, because you simply cannot give up on her characters. She gathers women into the (Vietnam) experience with moving conviction."—The New York Times

The Women is historical fiction at its very best. So moving, so wrenching, and yet, in the end, uplifting. Brava! I loved The Nightingale and The Four Winds, but The Women is my favorite.”—Nicholas D. Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning coauthor of Half the Sky

Beautifully heart-wrenching

Kristin Hannah has done it again, and Julian Whelan's performance was outstanding, as always. I learned so much and cried, and felt for all those that have really lived through the Vietnam War, and the women especially. Thank you for this beautiful book and narration. It will stay with me.

Amazing

This was such a good book. I’m sad that it’s over. I also had no idea about the roll women played in the Vietnam war, the ptsd they suffered and how they pulled through it. Beautiful story.

top book of 2024

i was a very young girl when the Vietnam war was ending but this story brought me back to those times, hearing my politically active (Canadian) parents talk, going to anti war demonstrations, the fashions, the world events. the changing times. This story was a gut punch, historically accurate, detailed, personal and so well written. I was truly sorry when it was over.

Excellent

l loved the story but most of all, I love how Kristen outlined the symptoms of PTSD thatost governments even in this day and age- 2024- seem to want to ignore and don't pay attention to as an important disability.

Great read! Highly recommend.

Such a great book! Heartbreaking, thought-provoking and empowering; I loved following Francis’ story. The narrator really brought the words to life.

Emotional rollercoaster

This was an amazing book that brought the unheard stories of female Vietnam vets to life. I was emotionally exhausted after I finished listening to this book - but so appreciated the stories shared throughout this novel.

This book. Powerful. Enlightening. Gutting. Beautiful.

I’m not sure that I knew what I was signing up for when I selected this book. But it delivered. So much more than I expected. I was immediately drawn in, my heart swelled and broke, the tears flowed both in joy and sorrow. Beautifully delivered by Whelan (as always), and my sincere Thank You to the author. This was the first book I’ve listened to/read by her and I’ve already planned my next read… but I’ll need a few days to reset & recover first! This one was…breathtaking. It will stick around in my mind for a while… It was brilliant.

Emotional and gripping.

This was a solid historical drama that inspired the historian in me and kept me tied to it, with wanting to know more of each characters’ story and conclusion. A wonderful tribute to all who served in the “forgotten war”.

A sad story about a sad time, but I enjoyed it.

I’m old enough to remember sad people after Vietnam but I was young enough that I wasn’t fully impacted by it.
I can’t believe the treatment of the returning nurses. Thanks for shedding light on that.
