Publisher's Summary

Now an AMC+ series starring Ben Whishaw

The acclaimed multimillion-copy bestseller, This Is Going to Hurt is Adam Kay’s equally "blisteringly funny" (Boston Globe) and “heartbreaking” (New Yorker) secret diaries of his years as a young doctor.

Welcome to 97-hour weeks. Welcome to life and death decisions. Welcome to a constant tsunami of bodily fluids. Welcome to earning less than the hospital parking meter. Wave goodbye to your friends and relationships. Welcome to the life of a first-year doctor.

Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights, and missed weekends, comedian and former medical resident Adam Kay’s This Is Going to Hurt provides a no-holds-barred account of his time on the front lines of medicine.

Hilarious, horrifying, and heartbreaking by turns, this is everything you wanted to know—and more than a few things you didn’t—about life on and off the hospital ward.

And yes, it may leave a scar.

Hilarious! And sad. But mostly hilarious!

I think one could listen to Adam Kay read the phone book and still be entertained!

Loved the honesty!

What an unflinching and enlightening look at the medical profession. I hope this will lead to an overall increase in appreciation and understanding of the skill and sacrifice involved in doing the job.

Didn't Hurt Much

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to these tales of hospital experiences. Some sad, some funny. Makes you realise doctors are humans first.

I have a newfound respect for doctors

Wow. This confirms how awful it must be to have the weight of the world constantly on your shoulders while trying to balance your home life. I hope the author has found peace and happiness.

Very good…

A very serious subject approached with a touch of humour. It was well narrated by the author.

Pretty darn funny... too short though

I thourghly enjoyed this book. As a nurse, I can somewhat relate. Some of his stories had me in tears. Some people are so unbelievable! It's really tragic though why he quit medicine. He sounded like a great doctor. But it sounds like he made the right choice for him.

Hit a little close to home

Medical training is in part a hazing and borders on psychological torture (sleep deprivation, days with no time to eat or and having to sneak off to pee, not to mention the horrors you may see). His stories were true and well told, but hit a little close to home for me to fully enjoy it. I do recommend this, especially to those who love someone going through residency, as it may help put their and your life in perspective. I caution those who completed residency recently. You may find it painful at times due to your own trauma.

Quick and Amusing Stories Told Well

While some stories are exactly what you'd expect the format of this as quick journal entries makes each story quick and bite sized, thus giving you a slight taste of the whirlwind speed at which doctors go flying between patients.

The telling is lively, funny and well edited.

Painfully funny

Witty and soulful… It was a joy to listen to every morning on my drive to hospital 😆. The book translates easily to non-NHS health authorities!
