About this listen

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride. Narrated by Michael Kramer.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Note from Brandon:

I started writing this in secret, as a novel just for my wife. She urged me to share it with the world—and alongside three other secret novels, with the support of readers worldwide it grew into the biggest Kickstarter campaign of all time. I’m excited to present this first book to you at last: a different type of Brandon Sanderson story, one I wrote when there were no time constraints, no expectations, and no limits on my imagination. Come be part of the magic.

incredible story

I loved the narrator and his voices. The story was magical and had some twists and turns I didn't expect but loved. What a imagination of this world.

Very Enjoyable entry, better suited for younger audiences

Always relish the opportunity to learn more about the 'verses, and though this entry can be enjoyed by anyone, younger audiences, like teenagers would probably benefit more from its subject matter. Great story nonetheless.

Absolutely Outstanding

This is an amazing book and a perfect example of Brandon Sanderson’s skill in writing, world building, and character development. If you are looking to enter Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere this is a beautiful first step. Loved it, now onto the other secret projects!

Amazing Storytelling, Interesting World

I really enjoyed this novel! I liked that it was a standalone but the world building felt vast. The characters are charming, funny and flawed. The narrator did a fantastic job, top 10 in my audible library.

So magical

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 3.5 stars rounded up for Goodreads.

Cozy fantasy that ties in with the cosmere? Yes please!

I definitely read this too soon in the cosmere! I know enough to understand some of the tie ins and call outs (Sazed got a full on name drop!) to other worlds and characters but I know I missed context and there are obvious tie ins that I know nothing about yet. I will have to re-read this one maybe nearing the end of my cosmere adventure to better understand them.

That being said this book would be fun without knowing anything about the cosmere but the easter eggs and tie ins are what make this a good read for me. I am sure my star rating will go up on my second read when I better understand the context to this fun whimsical story.

I really love the smart, feminine, and whimsical character that is Tress. Following her through this book was like watching a flower bloom. This is an unconventional coming of age story and proof that Sanderson is a feminist at heart. Watching Tress overcome fear and learn to be outspoken was so wholesome and fulfilling.

I loved the influence that Sanderson pulled from The Princess Bride and can see that parallel throughout this adventure. I adore that he made the princess of the story the protagonist. That she was no damsel, even if she had characteristics of one. That her parents trusted and respected her. That she was thoughtful and mindful with her decision making. That she had empathy and compassion while being outspoken and tenacious. What a loveable character!

Overall another great Sanderson read. I feel warm and fuzzy inside after finishing this one and am so excited to continue my cosmere adventure.

We Love a self aware hero

It was slightly predictable but that didn’t bother me in the slightest. I really enjoyed this story. If you’ve read Sanderson you know to expect a twist or two along the way.

Tress is a lovable heroine. I am constantly amazed at the worlds in this universe Sanderson has created. The story was light hearted and fun but not without some weight and tense moments. A really fun listen. I’m going right now to start another one of the secret project books. Oh! Something to know if you’ve read other Sanderson works. The pacing is faster given that it’s a stand alone novel. There isn’t as much time devoted to world developing as there is in something like The Stormlight books. It works well in this format.
