This was my first time reading Melinda Leigh, and I picked up Twisted Truth mainly because of my April book club challenge—I had to choose from a specific list, and this one fit. Honestly, it’s not my usual genre at all, but it ended up being a pretty decent read for what it is.
This novella leans heavily into suspense with a touch of closed-door romance. The story follows Detective Seth Harding, who responds to a double homicide and discovers a young boy chained in a basement—yeah, it gets intense right from the start. The boy is clearly traumatized and won’t speak, and Seth ends up bringing in Carly, the only social worker he trusts… who also happens to be his wife. Carly is dealing with her own past trauma, which adds an extra emotional layer to the story.
I actually really enjoyed the action and the tension, especially with the storm closing in and isolating the town—it gave everything a bit more urgency. I didn’t guess the ending, which is always a win for me 👀, but at the same time, it does stay pretty straightforward (it is a novella, after all).
There’s also a subtle deeper theme about trauma and how people cope with it. It’s not overly heavy, but it does make you reflect a little on resilience and facing your fears, which I appreciated.
That said… it’s still not my go-to type of read. I’m more of a romance-first kind of reader, and this one is definitely more suspense-forward. But overall, it was well written, engaging, and a solid introduction to the author. Will I read more from her? Maybe… I’m not fully convinced yet, but I wouldn’t say no either.
Quick, tense, and a little deeper than expected—just not quite my usual vibe.
