Publisher's Summary

A number-one best seller in several categories with over 14,000 five-star ratings on Goodreads.

From the number-one New York Times best-selling and award-winning author Colleen Hoover comes "A stand-alone romantic thriller that is tragic, creepy, and brilliant!" (Mel Reader Reviews)

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of best-selling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

Sexy. Twisted. Consuming.

Due to graphic scenes and mature content, this book is recommended for listeners 18+.

Editorial Review

An all-consuming romantic thriller that will leave you guessing, gasping, and utterly engrossed, Verity tests the bounds of what humans are capable of and brings to light just how dark those limits can be.

New York Times best-selling author Colleen Hoover delivers a richly layered, utterly engrossing story with Verity. An expert at romance novels, Hoover infuses this tale with twist after plot twist for a dark psychological thriller combined with a hot and spicy love story. When famous author Verity Crawford is badly injured, her husband Jeremy Crawford hires Lowen Ashleigh to continue the author’s work. Lowen is elated at this offer of a dream job, but as soon as she begins searching through Verity’s notes, she finds herself in the middle of a nightmare. What she discovers is chilling, but her burgeoning connection with Jeremy is anything but, and she still has a series of books to complete.

Verity takes a striking step beyond standard romance fare, shocking listeners with its bold humanity and chilling side. Listeners will struggle to hit pause, spending every moment aching to know what happens next, before diving back into this story, as full of love as deception, lust, and betrayal.

This standalone audiobook is as devastatingly dark as it is addictive, and as sexy as it is suspenseful. Narrators Vanessa Johansson and Amy Landon offer their fittingly dramatic and electrifying voices to this unpausable thriller. Landon has narrated more than 300 titles and podcasts, while Johansson carries over 60, and both have won awards for their work. Together they bring just the right level of tension and emotion to their nuanced and engaging performance of Verity.

Awful on every level

The characters are unbelievable and annoying. The dialogue (as written) is tin-eared and insipid (what else is to be expected from unbelievable and annoying characters?) The dialogue (as performed) is grating and one-note.

The plotline is ridiculous. Graphic sex scenes are liberally peppered throughout: if you love giving men pleasure with your mouth, this book is for you, and may lessen the tedium of the plotline and bland and /or unbelievable characters.
There's a line in the book that goes: "All our memories! The bl*wjobs! The swallowing!" It's supposed to inspire nostalgia in the one to whom the line is directed.

Violence against a 6 month-old baby is gruesome and disturbing.

Both narrators are authors. No author involved or portrayed in this book has any skill but one of them talks as tho she has a "process" and regards herself as highly skilled.

The performances are rotten.

The principal narrator has a tone of voice that is trying to go for sardonic and cynical. She tells everything and shows very little. Nothing about her is believable: her predicaments, her reactions, her traumas.

The secondary narrator? Well her voice is softer, more melodic, which, at first, is a blessing after the principal's voice but is actually over-acted and monotonous once the blessing wears off.

The worst? Of many bad things? There is a male character (or two) in the book, and the two female narrators read his lines with the same grating inflection throughout. Slightly different from one another, but, individually, never deviating in delivery from start to finish, and both impaired (the deliveries) by their (the narrators') attempt to lower their voice to "man depth."

It. Is. Laughable. All of it.

I hate it so much, I've wasted my time writing a review to warn others away.

This book has no heart, no brain, and no saving graces. Do not believe the hype.

Great book - HORRIBLE narration

I read this book a few months ago and couldn't put it down. It's a fantastic read - well written, easy to follow and suspenseful right until the very last line. I never pick up thrillers but this was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was! I saw that the audiobook for Verity was released today so I figured I'd give it a listen while I work away on some boring data entry. I'm not sure which narrator is which but one is much more enjoyable to listen to than the other. The first narrator who narrates the protagonist, Lowen, along with all other character with the exception of Verity was fine to listen to. She isn't the most organic narrator but I wouldn't refuse to listen to more of her work. The second author, however, who narrates Verity's manuscript is the worst narrator I've ever listened to! She sounds like you're listening to Siri read a book to you. It's painstakingly annoying. She has almost no inflection whatsoever and sounds like her parts were sped up. When I slowed her parts down a bit it was slightly more palatable but just barely. It is very disappointing that such a great book is this annoying to listen to.

Pick up the book to read - you won't be disappointed. Please don't judge the book on this narration!

Dark

I went into this listen blind, i didn't know what the book was about. It was really hard to listen to sometimes because its very dark and honestly I don't think I will ever read/listen to a book by this author again.

Meh

I was really put off by the “autobiography” part to the point of almost not finishing this audiobook.

Overall, I expected more of a twist from this book. The opportunity was there but didn’t hit the mark.

Meh

Lots of hype and positive reviews so was hoping for more - the suspense is minimal and the storyline is slow to develop.

Completely hated it

Characters were one dimensional, story was predictable, tedious sex scenes were completely unnecessary and not pertinent to the story at all. I kept waiting for something to happen that would grab my interest; obviously that never came. I was absolutely unimpressed and bored throughout. How this book has so many good reviews is completely beyond me. The narration was also painful to listen to - no emotion or realism in any dialogue. Spare yourself the time and read something else.

I should have returned it.

I found the characters in the book annoying and the dialogue between them not believable. I found the main character unlikeable. I was a chapter or two in and realized this book wasn’t going to be for me. I tried to find a way to return it and it looks like too much of a headache, so I thought well I’ll just keep reading it might get better. It didn’t. There was potential for suspense, but it never really got there and I was expecting more of a twist near the end. Oh well. Can’t like them all.

Story was Great. Narrator was terrible

I loved this book so much! i didn't want to stop listening to it. The only down fall was the narrator! Absolutely terrible. A few times I found myself wanting to turn it off because of the voice.
if you have a choice to listen or read it I definitely recommend READING it. If they could change the narrator it could possibly be worth listening to.

Grating

The narrators were not for me. The story was mediocre but disappointing. This novel did not live up to the hype it gets.
