About this listen

October, 2042.

Three days ago, Jack Mitchel saved his life. By dying.

He dodged a world-ending bullet - in the form of an extinction-level asteroid, cannonballing toward Earth - by successfully uploading his mind into the brand new, ultra-immersive, fantasy-based VRMMORPG - Viridian Gate Online. Unfortunately, he's also stumbled headlong into a secret conspiracy that will transform V.G.O. into a new feudal dark age.

Jack expected to live out his new fantasy life in peace, but now he and his misfit crew of rebels are the only ones preventing a tyrant emperor and his regime from taking power. Thankfully, everything isn't quite as hopeless as it seems - Jack has a plan. Sort of. With only a handful of supporters, he's going to get the jump on the bloodthirsty empire, by snatching one of their key cities right from underneath their noses. In order to pull off the impossible, however, Jack's going to have to develop his formidable Shadowmancer powers, raid some ridiculous dungeons, and make some shady allies - allies who may be more dangerous than the empire itself.

There was never a dull moment in this book! It had a very good theme too.

a solid continuation

a solid follow up to the first book, with a reasonable amount of character and story development, however still shorter than one would prefer.

Bigger more dramatic events

This book is only available free until Dec 14 2023, unless they add it again. Listen to it now while you still can! (it's a long series, save your credits while you can.) FYI, the rest of the series is currently available on Kindle Unlimited if you don't want to commit to all those credits.)
This is still fun. But listen to book 1 first or you'll be lost. This wouldn't stand alone.
This book feels more like a game. There is still the same sense that this is real established in book 1. But the actions of the main character are bigger. He' s now a faction leader and more powerful. I listened to this as a free read. I'm just started book 3.

*Note: Book One is Obligatory

This book is fantastic. Character motivations make sense, the overarching quest is captivating (to stop unscrupulous political/tech-millionaire/über-rich/elitist figures from dominating the VR world as they did IRL), and in-game battles, encounters, and character progression are written with unsurpassed vivid description. J.A. Hunter understands perfectly what makes LitRPG worthwhile: the immersion of relatable people into a fantasy world where they use what are basically superpowers to pursue goals, revel in the rewards for their efforts, and grow ever more powerful. Admirably, Hunter avoids focussing on character sheets, inventory screens, and the autistic-level micromanagement of point-spending that plagues so many books in this genre. Instead, he provides a nice balance of metagame reasoning and action-driven plot. It works beautifully. Additionally, the setting is mind's-eye realistic, the characters are interesting, and the in-game quests are challenging and exciting.
The one notable issue I have with this book is that it makes zero sense if you haven't read 'Cataclysm' - Hunter merely picks up where he left off (this book has very little standalone merit).

Armen Taylor continues his outstanding narration from Book One. The same realistic character voices are used for Grim Jack, Cutter, and Chief Colle, for example. Once again, his volume control issues are noticeable (sometimes almost shouting dialogue).. and the book is best consumed at 1.15X.. but Taylor turns in a remarkable performance.

'Crimson Alliance' is worth 9 stars out of 10. You will be lost if you try to start 'The Viridian Gate Archives' with this book, but it's well worth a Credit. I am grateful to Audible for making it available in the 'Plus' catalogue - I might not have tried it otherwise.
..and it's some of the best GameLit I have read in a long time.

[ASIDE: Listing the Buffs characters get with a good cup of coffee - 30 minutes of boosted hit points; 30 minutes of increased intelligence; 30 minutes of accelerated stamina regeneration - is brilliant]

entertaining but predictable

narrator was great, but premise isn't my cup of tea. I found myself upping the speed as story was dry in places

exciting story

this reminds me a lot of "The Land" series by Aleron Kong... it's not quite as gripping but it's still got a really great story. I love the end of the world angle.... you really start to care for some of the characters and hate other characters. I really wish these books were longer. I can't wait to get to the next one! definitely must read if you're into fantasy or video games or D&D.
