About this listen

From USA Today best seller Ella James—writing MM romance under the pen name Ellis James—comes an addictive enemies-to-lovers MM romance that audiences are calling one of the best love stories of the year.

It's true, I'm keeping secrets.

But I just found out one of his....

My new stepbrother is insufferable.

You'd think it wouldn't matter since I won't be here for long, but this guy gets under my skin like no one ever has. All-American, baby-faced, blue-eyed band dork and star soccer player. Everything about him is the picture of perfection—unlike me.

I don't think Do Gooder knows I'm starting senior year late. And he definitely doesn't know why. I've got secrets I'm taking with me to the grave.

Everyone thinks I moved to my dad's small town to play varsity football, but I've got other plans, and DG's trying to thwart them all. He's making my life worse than it already is.

Having him around is a damn plague. But I can fight back.

I found out a little secret about Mr. Perfect. He plays for the "other" team. That ball bat he's got stuffed into his gray sweatpants—it swings "that" way. The best part about this twisted game is when I find out it gets hard for me.

The Do Gooder...he wants me. I don't know why. But I know how to make him pay.

This story is emotional and so romantic, but it has some dark parts. Triggers include mental health struggles, trauma, abuse, drug use, and some themes that may be difficult for LGBTIQA+ listeners struggling with faith issues. All these things are handled as gently as possible.

An emotional story of healing

This is such a heart breaking story of the homophobia Ezra faces from his own mother and the damage caused by her misguided attempts to “cure” him. His step brother Josh has a heart of gold, never giving up on him no matter what. Their relationship is wrought with all the push and pull you’d expect as they navigate through being step brothers, their attraction, Ezra’s nightmares, and so much more. The spicy scenes are off the charts hot and the narrators were amazing!

Long and Sweet! It's everything I ever wanted!

People that are complaining that the book being long is bloody ridiculous... 🙄
Sure some things might be redundant but that the key word here is "some" like few thing only. Trust this book is NOT long because is off redundancy. It long because it very detailed scene. Which I always wanted for all the romance book I read. Most just skipped a lot the good time and the bad times. But this book is incredibly detailed and it's fantastic!
I was absolutely frustrated because some reviews made me feel like is a book not as good. However this book is absolutely incredible. So bloody sweet and tender. Not at all what of the covers made it look. It so much more heartfelt and so heartwarming. The story in thus book is the very definition of what love truly is.

I understand that long book might not be for everyone... but come on! That not the author's problem nor their fault.

I always hate that many books I read/listen to are quite short 6-9 hours on average. It absolutely wrecks me that they end so damn quickly.
Ezra and Miller is so damn sweet to each other. Feeling absolute true love toward each other. Loving a person regardless of their flaws and mistakes. It's unconditional and pure feeling taking care of someone.

Thank you so much for making a long and interesting book I can enjoy without have it in 3 books.

good story

my only problem with the book is that there is a lot of repetition of information. I could have been a cleaner, shorter read.

Good book but false advertising

The information on the title details lead me to believe this was a bully romance story, which it is but the bullying turns to romance within the first few hours and the bullying isn’t intense as it’s lead to believe. The remaining and majority of the book is still good to listen to and has laughs, cries, heartwarming and blood boiling scenes but the description doesn’t lead to what to heart of the book really is. Overall great roller coaster of emotion and two amazing characters just not the book I thought it would be when I started it

Great story

I wasn't sure I could stay focused and finish the book. I'm so glad I did. Ezra's story is heart breaking, but having Josh see through his walls and tear them down was absolutely amazing. This book had me in heart wrenching sobs and then tears or laughter. This book is now one of my top 10 favorites. I will definitely recommend to others.

Has all the feels!

I became really invested in the main characters’ lives and their love for each other. It always helps when the narrators are some of my favourites. “Miller” and Ezra are people you’ll wish you could hang with, or give a big hug to, or even shake some sense into.

I was sooo happy when the book didn’t just end, like so many other books, after they reunited following a break up. The length of the book gives the characters the time to go deeper into the background stories and not just immediately into HEA after getting back together.

Too many romance novels don’t just follow the same tropes and the same formula, but they also spend almost the exact same amount of time each segment of the formula. It’s always boy meets boy, boys become mortal enemies, boys use their mutual dislike to hide their lust for each other, boys get hot and heavy, boys have big blow up based on miscommunication/lack of communication, boys realize their mistake, get hot and heavy one more time and end of story. Maybe throw in an epilogue to tie up a loose end or too. Ugh, so annoying. Substitute a girl for one of the boys and it’s the same thing.

This was my first Ellis (Ella) James book but I hope I will be just as happy with the next ones.

Beautiful story but Smut was done a bit weirdly

Loved the storyline, Narration was decent. I didn’t like the writing on some occasions. Some smut scenes were too cringy. I am not new to smut or prude about it. Some parts were definitely odd

Emotional AF

How do you review a 700-page epic, emotional story? I’m not sure I can do it justice.

Let me say this first. 700 pages sounds daunting. So the first suggestion, listen to the audiobook. It was fantastic. Iggy Toma & Tim Paige did this book justice. 100 %. Otherwise, feel free to read it as a duet. Ellis themselves admits it could have been one. You’ll want to take your time with this. It captures so much!

Whichever way you read it, just know you are in for a ride. Sometimes raging, sometimes sobbing, but ultimately finding so much peace and love.

Miller and Ezra are soulmates. Pure and simple. Granted the road to their happy ending is filled with angst, pain, horrible abuse and mental health struggles. Compared to all that, the fact that they are step-brothers is really a small detail.

Trust me when I say, all the anguish is necessary and makes their path to a happy ending all the more satisfying.

This is a book you will probably never fully recover from. It will haunt you, but also bring you peace.

Gut punch right in the feels

This book will stay with me for a while, I am sure. Especially in this Day when LGBT people are targetted by bigots in power. This is not an easy read, but it's still a beautiful one. The narration is absolutely off-the-charts exceptional, and the pacing of the story is perfect. It's a long ride, but never a boring one. The good moments are so powerful, especially because of their contrasts with the horrible things that Ezra has gone through.
