About this listen
There are many miles from the business school and basketball court at the University of Southern California to 50 million viewers for the final episode of a TV show called Magnum P.I. Tom Selleck has lived every one of those miles in his own iconoclastic and joyful way.
Frank, funny and open-hearted, You Never Know is an intimate memoir from one of the most beloved actors of our time, the highly personal story of a remarkable life and thoroughly accidental career. In his own voice and uniquely unpretentious style, the famed actor brings listeners on his uncharted but serendipitous journey to the top in Hollywood, his temptations and distractions, his misfires and mistakes and, over time, his well-earned success. Along the way, he clears up an armload of misconceptions and shares dozens of never-told stories from all corners of his personal and professional life. His rambunctious California childhood. His clueless arrival as a good-looking college jock in Hollywood (from the Dating Game to the Fox New Talent Program to co-starring with Mae West and escorting her to black-tie social functions). What it was like to emerge as a mega-star in his mid-thirties and remain so for decades to come, an actor whose authenticity and ease in front of the camera connected with audiences worldwide while embodying and also redefining the clichés of onscreen manhood.
In You Never Know, Selleck recounts his personal friendships with a vivid army of A-listers, everyone from Frank Sinatra to Carol Burnett to Sam Elliott, paying special tribute to his mentor James Garner of The Rockford Files, who believed, like Selleck, that TV protagonists are far more interesting when they have rough edges. He also more than tips his hat to the American western and the scruffy band of actors, directors and other ruffians who helped define that classic genre, where Selleck has repeatedly found a happy home. Magnum fans will be fascinated to learn how Selleck put his career on the line to make Thomas Magnum a more imperfect hero and explains why he walked away from a show that could easily have gone on for years longer.
Hollywood is never easy, even for stars who make it look that way. In You Never Know, Selleck explains how he’s struggled to balance his personal and professional lives, frequently adjusting his career to protect his family’s privacy and normalcy. His journey offers a truly fresh perspective on a changing industry and a changing world. Beneath all the charm and talent and self-deprecating humor, Selleck’s memoir reveals an American icon who has reached remarkable heights by always insisting on being himself.

To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them.

Great book
I enjoyed this listen, and appreciate Mr. Selleck, his approach to things, his down to earth nature, and sincerity in how he recounts his life story. His personality comes through in the audio (given he's narrating), and it was definitely worth the listen. Thank you Mr. Selleck.
Down sides: too many dialogue responses which somewhat ruined the flow in some passages, I don't recall an exact quote, but something like: "I considered having a sandwich. No! Not that kind of sandwich, another kind, the kind I wanted." That said, the narration does sort of resemble the narratives Magnum provided during each show... "I know what you're thinking,..." as if the audience was in the story along with him, so I can see why they may have chosen this style. I had to listen at x1.3 as 1 was way too slow.
He dedicates most of the book to the biggest portions of his life (as one would expect): life pre-Magnum, the Indiana Jones-Magnum dilemma, and Magnum. In the end he covers a bit of Blue Bloods and mentions Quigly in passing, but never discusses Friends and what it was like to work with that crew.
I especially appreciated his accessible humanity, his honest depiction of failures/successes, even his relationships on and off set, his ranch, his kids. He invites you in and makes you feel welcome, Comes across as a genuinely nice person.

A Must Read
Greetings, Mr. Selleck,
I wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading this terrific memoir you have written. Thank you so much for the thoughtfulness you convey on each page.
You were generous with the essential details, giving the reader, me, the ability to think they were right there in the moment. And I sure did, many, many times. I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed that.
I have leaned so much and I now have the answers to all the questions I might have had watching all of the Magnum seasons. I really enjoyed the peek behind the curtain. Each episode was always top notch in every way it could be by the time it made it to my television screen. In my mind, this television show was put together by many professionals really good at their jobs. Never compromising the quality nor consistency of the story or the actor’s portrayals.
Home From The Sea was heartbreaking for me as well and one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
Another episode I have held in very high esteem was Solo Flight. I was so sure the guys would come to Magnum’s rescue as events had usually unfolded - but alas they did not and Magnum had to save himself. It was that same quality and consistency I have mentioned that had tricked me on this particular episode. And I loved that! I felt so victorious when Magnum saved himself as if I had done it myself.
That same professionalism, quality and consistency description I also apply to the series Blue Bloods. An outstanding television show my husband and I have enjoyed so much. I remember excitedly telling Terry about reading your interview all those years ago in the magazine Cowboys and Indians about the upcoming series and what it was going to be about.
Your projects and your land are indeed fortunate to have you in their corner as their stewards. They were and continue to be supported in a way that allows them to grow and succeed.
You have in fact done good work. Thank you for your service.
All the best,
Joyce Levair

Insight and honesty
I work in the film/television industry, and really connected to Tom’s insight and honesty of how it works. And I was one of thousands that were affected by the writers strike , which was right after COVID, and the hardships so many film workers had to deal with.
I worked with Tom on a show in Alberta many years ago called “Monte Walsh” and I saw how he treated everyone, as well as an incredible work ethic..
Thanks for sharing this life of yours..

Soulful & Honest
Tom Selleck delivers a soulful and honest account of his life as he comes into his own craft and discovers his true calling as an actor. I loved every minute and was sad when it was over...I want more... Especially now that Blue Bloods has concluded and at the time of this book Blue Bloods hadn't ended yet. I'd love to hear about Tom's time in the military in more detail and anything that wasn't covered in this book because I know there is probably a lot more to tell. Congratulations Tom Selleck on the success of your book! It was definitely worth the listen.
