During his doctoral studies, Professor Borsato was recognized as a SSHRC Scholar (2020–2024), a Robert L. Middlekauff Fellow at the Huntington Library (2023–2024), a Paul Oskar Kristeller Fellow with the Renaissance Society of America (2024), and a Sansom Ideas Foundation Scholar (2023–2024). An expert in Indigenous and early Imperial history, his dissertation takes an oceanic perspective to explore the emotional and material structures Indigenous nations—such as the Arawaks, Kalinago, Powhatans, Abenaki, Mi’kmaq, Beothuk, Cree, and Inuit—used to negotiate and contest imperialism in the broader Indigenous-colonial relationship.
