The Sand-Man (German: Der Sandmann, 1816) is a short story written in German by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It was the first in an 1817 book of stories titled Die Nachtstücke (The Night Pieces). The story is told by a narrator who claims to have known Lothar. It begins by quoting three letters.

Zur Buße für seine schweren Verbrechen schreibt der Mönch Medardus die Geschichte seines Lebens nieder: Durch den Genuss des ihm anvertrauten Teufelselixiers, einer Reliquie des hl. Antonius, werden im jungen Mönch Medardus sinnliche Begierden und die unbezähmbare Leidenschaft zu einer Frau geweckt. Der Mönch sieht sich immer wieder den Versuchungen des Teufels ausgesetzt. Ob schöne Frauen, Ruhmbegierde oder nackte Mordlust - er bricht sein Gelübde auf jede nur erdenkliche Weise.

In diesem Kistchen befindet sich nun aus dem Nachlaß des heiligen Antonius eben eine solche Flasche mit einem Teufelselixier. Übrigens kann ich versichern, lieber Bruder Medardus, daß, sooft ich die Flasche, ja nur dieses Kistchen, worin sie verschlossen, berühre, mich ein unerklärliches inneres Grauen angewandelt
