The small, rundown village of Great Diddling is full of stories—author Berit Gardner can feel it. The way the villagers avoid outsiders, the furtive stares and whispers in the presence of newcomers… Berit can sense the edge of a story waiting to be unraveled, and she's just the person to do it. After years of exchanging books, letters and thoughts on the meaning of literature and life, Sara, mousy, disheveled, who has never been anywhere in her life--has really lived only for her work in a beloved bookshop, which has just closed its doors for the last time--bravely decides to accept her unknown friend's invitation to visit. But when she arrives, she finds her house empty, the funeral guests just heading home. . .

After an accident kills Henny, the manager of the Pine Away Motel and Cabins, she watches as the three people who mean the most to her are reunited at her funeral. All three are unhappy, and Henny is devastated to know that she'll have to leave them when they need her the most. But...what if she doesn't have to leave after all? With the funeral over and the last casserole dish packed up and carted home, Henny realizes she has one last opportunity to help her friends discover the happiness they once knew.

Tout commence par les lettres que s'envoient deux femmes très différentes : Sara Lindqvist, jeune libraire suédoise introvertie que ne vit que pour les livres, et Amy Harris, soixante-cinq ans, vieille dame cultivée et solitaire, de Broken Wheel, dans l'Iowa. Après deux ans d'échanges et de conseils à la fois sur la littérature et sur la vie, Sara décide de rendre visite à Amy. Mais, quand elle arrive là-bas, elle apprend avec stupeur qu'Amy est morte. Elle se retrouve seule et perdue dans cette étrange petite ville.

L'été de ses 18 ans, Anita Grankvist s'était fixé trois objectifs dans la vie : apprendre à conduire une moto, acheter une maison et devenir complètement indépendante. Presque vingt ans plus tard, Anita est certes indépendante mais n'a toujours pas réalisé ses deux autres rêves. Elle mène une petite vie tranquille, seule avec sa fille Emma, et travaille au supermarché local. Le départ d'Emma pour l'université va bouleverser son quotidien.

Sara eröffnet kurzerhand eine Buchhandlung und siehe da: Über Umwege werden sogar Nicht-Leser zu Bücherwürmern.

Det hele starter med en brevveksling mellem to meget forskellige kvinder. Den generte bogorm Sara er 28 år og fra Haninge i Sverige, og Amy er 75 og fra Broken Wheel i Iowa, USA. Efter at have skrevet sammen i to år og udvekslet tanker om primært bøger, men også om livet generelt, bestemmer Sara sig for at besøge Amy. Da hun ankommer, er Amy i mellemtiden pludselig død. Sara står nu alene i en lille flække ude i ingenting.
