Several weeks ago, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec and his team uncovered and stopped a domestic terrorist attack in Montréal, arresting the person behind it. A man they called the Black Wolf. But their relief is short-lived. In a sickening turn of events, Gamache has realized that plot, as horrific as it was, was just the beginning. Perhaps even a deliberate misdirection. One he fell into. Something deeper and darker, more damaging, is planned. Did he in fact arrest the Black Wolf, or are they still out there?

Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Winter in Three Pines, and the sleepy village is carpeted in snow. It's a time of peace and goodwill - until a scream pierces the biting air. A spectator at the annual Boxing Day curling match has been fatally electrocuted. Despite the large crowd, there are no witnesses and - apparently - no clues. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache discovers a history of secrets and enemies in the dead woman's past.

When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Former Chief Inspector of Homicide, Armand Gamache, has found a peace he'd never imagined possible, away from the front line of the police and in the tranquil village of Three Pines. But when his friend Clara Morrow asks for help, he can't bring himself to refuse her, despite the old wounds it threatens to re-open. Clara's husband, Peter, is missing, having failed to come home on the first anniversary of their separation, as promised.

In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

Au creux d’une forêt sauvage du Québec, les moines de Saint-Gilbert-entre-les-Loups vivent cloîtrés et en silence depuis des siècles. La communauté oubliée est redevenue célèbre à cause de ses chants grégoriens, dont l’effet est si puissant qu’on le nomme «le beau mystère». Mais elle refuse de laisser quiconque pénétrer dans son sanctuaire… jusqu’à ce que l’inspecteur-chef Gamache et son adjoint Beauvoir se présentent avec un funeste billet d’entrée: le cadavre du chef de chœur découvert dans le jardin du monastère.

When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away.

Tandis que les villageois de Three Pines se réjouissent déjà des feux d'artifice du Nouvel An, Armand Gamache doit interrompre ses vacances en famille pour répondre à une affectation en apparence anodine : assurer la sécurité d'une professeure de statistiques lors d'une conférence prononcée à l'université voisine. Perplexe, le chef des homicides de la Sûreté se renseigne sur Abigail Robinson et découvre une femme au discours si dangereux qu'il supplie la chancelière d'annuler son allocution. Colette Roberge refuse, invoquant la liberté de l'enseignement, et l'accuse de lâcheté intellectuelle.

Des appels téléphoniques incessants perturbent la tranquillité d’une chaude matinée d’août à Three Pines. Armand Gamache s’obstine à ne pas répondre, bien qu’il sache qui est à l’autre bout du fil. Et lorsqu’il répond enfin, sa colère gâche pour de bon l’ambiance de ce dimanche matin. Ce n’est que le premier d’une série d’événements insolites qui mènent le chef des homicides de la Sûreté et son équipe vers une terrifiante évidence : quelque chose de bien plus tragique que n’importe quel meurtre se prépare.

Three Pines, dans les Cantons-de-l’Est, est un petit coin de paradis. Durant le week-end de l’Action de grâce, Jane Neal est trouvée morte dans les bois, le cœur transpercé. Ce qui pourrait n’être qu’un bête accident de chasse laisse perplexe Armand Gamache, l’inspecteur-chef de la Sûreté du Québec. Qui pourrait bien souhaiter la mort de cette enseignante à la retraite, artiste à ses heures, qui a vu grandir tous les enfants du village? En détective expérimenté, Armand Gamache se doute qu’un serpent se cache au cœur de l’éden.

Tandis que le Vieux-Québec scintille sous la neige et s’égaye des flonflons du carnaval, Armand Gamache tente de se remettre du traumatisme d’une opération policière qui a mal tourné. Mais, pour l’inspecteur-chef, impossible d’échapper longtemps à un nouveau crime, surtout lorsqu’il survient dans la vénérable Literary and Historical Society, une institution de la minorité anglophone de Québec. La victime est un archéologue amateur connu pour sa quête obsessive de la sépulture de Champlain.
