Le jeune Kappus adressa à Rilke, alors âgé de 28 ans, une longue lettre où il lui confiait sa vocation de poète. Rilke ne s'attache pas à porter un jugement sur les poèmes de Kappus.

En 1903, Rainer Maria Rilke répond à une longue missive envoyée par un jeune homme de vingt ans, Franz Kappus, qui est élève officier comme il le fut à son âge. S'ensuit une correspondance qui durera jusqu'en 1908 et qui sera publiée par les soins de Franz en 1929. Nous ne connaîtrons jamais ses lettres, car il ne publiera que celles de Rilke, préférant s'effacer derrière le poète.

The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge (Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge) has been described as an anti-novel. It is set in Paris in the period just before the First World War, but it presents a bleaker milieu than that described by Proust. The language is terse, the atmosphere painful, the images uncompromising. Rilke drew on the short period he spent in Paris in 1903 where, in contrast to the rural circumstances in which he had lived before, he found the underbelly of urban life distressing.

Franz Xaver Kappus era un estudiante en la Academia Militar Teresiana en Vienna, Austria, cuando fue sorprendido por uno de sus profesores mientras leía uno de los libros de Rilke.
