Jungle Tales of Tarzan is a collection of 12 loosely connected short stories written by Edgar Rice Burroughs about the title character, Tarzan.

At the conclusion of The Gods of Mars, John Carter's wife and two other women were locked in a slowly rotating prison attached to the Temple of the Sun, each of whose hundreds of cells are only open to the outside world once every year. John Carter must discover the secret of the Temple of the Sun to rescue the Holy Thern's daughter Phaidor, who has been imprisoned with Dejah Thoris and another Barsoomian princess, Thuvia of Ptarth.

A young Arizona prospector, chased by Indians, takes refuge in a mysterious cave. A strange gas paralyzes him. His spirit leaves his body and travels to Mars where he becomes a warrior.

This is the fifth story in the Tarzan adventure novels. Tarzan’s enemy in this book is a Belgian traitor and an Arab chieftain named Achmet Zek. Tarzan intends to "liberate" more jewels from the lost city of Opar, unaware that his enemies know of his plan and that they intend to liberate the jewels from Tarzan. The running battle becomes so intense that Tarzan is incensed to the point of losing his newly found, refined demeanor and becomes the beast of old with a terrible ferocity.

His quest carries him ultimately to the mysterious northern pole. And thus, in this third novel, John Carter must wait an entire year before he can free his beloved Dejah Thoris.

This novel was first published episodically in 1912, a year before Burroughs released Tarzan of the Apes, which would catapult him to international fame. This novel helped to define an emerging genre: science fiction.
