「アハハハ。どうもしねえだよ。仕事を手伝いせえすれあ、ええんだ」
「許して……許して下さあい。僕……僕は……お母さんが……姉さんが家（うち）に居るんですから……」
「ウハハハハ……云う事を聴かねえとコレだぞ」
「致します致します。何でも致します。……すぐに……すぐに船から下して下さい。殺さないで下さい」
「知ってやがったか。ワハハハハハハハ」
昭和二年頃の十月の末だったっけ……
足音高くブリッジに登って行った俺は、船長（おやじ）の背後でワザと足音高く立停まった。
「おはよう……」と声をかけたがは見向きもしない。何しろ船長仲間でも指折の変人だからね。何か一心に考えていたらしい。俺は右手に提げた黄色い、四角い紙包を船長の鼻の先にブラ下げてキリキリと回転さした。
「御註文のチベット紅茶です。やッと探し出したんです」
船長（おやじ）はやっとびっくりしたらしく首を縮めた。無言のまま六尺豊かの長身をニューとこっちへ向けて紅茶を受取った。
「ウウ……機関長か……アリガト……」とプッスリ云った。コンナ時にニンガリともしないのがこの船長の特徴な-

五郎君はお菓子が好きでしようがありませんでした。御飯も何もたべずにお菓子ばかりたべているので、お父様やお母様は大層心配をして、いくら五郎さんが泣いてもお菓子を遣らない事にしました。
お父様とお母様がお出かけになったある日のこと。兄さん夫婦から「五郎殿へ」と書いた郵便が届きました。鼻を当てかいでみると、中から甘い甘いにおいがしました。
五郎さんはもう夢中になって開いて見ると、それは思った通りお菓子で、ドロップ、ミンツ、キャラメル、チョコレート、ウエファース、ワッフル、ドーナツ、スポンジ、ローリング、ボンボン、そのほかいろいろ、ある事ある事……。一箱ペロリと食べてしまった五郎さんは、そのまま何喰わぬ顔で蒲団にもぐり込んでしまいました。
やがて何だか恐ろしく苦しくなって来ましたので、どうしたのかと眼を開いて見ますと、最前喰べたお菓子連中が、めいめい赤や青や紫や黄色や又は金銀の着物を着て、男や女の役者姿になって大勢いならんでいるのがはっきりと見えました。

私は嬉しい。「あやかしの鼓」の由来を書いていい時機が来たから……
「あやかし」という名前はこの鼓の胴が世の常の桜やつつじとちがって「綾になった木目を持つ赤がし」で出来ているところからもじったものらしい。同時にこの名称は能楽でいう「妖怪（アヤカシ）」という意味にも通っている。
この鼓はまったく鼓の中の妖怪である。皮も胴もかなり新らしいもののように見えて実は百年ばかり前に出来たものらしいが、これをしかけて打ってみると、ほかの鼓の、あのポンポンという明るい音とはまるで違った、陰気な、余韻の無い……ポ……ポ……ポ……という音を立てる。
この音は今日迄の間に私が知っているだけで六、七人の生命を呪った。しかもその中の四人は大正の時代にいた人間であった。皆この鼓の音を聞いたために死を早めたのである。
これは今の世の中では信ぜられぬことであろう。それ等の呪われた人々の中で、最近に問題になった三人の変死の模様を取り調べた人々が、その犯人を私――音丸久弥と認めたのは無理もないことである。私はその最後の一人として生き残っているのだから……
私はお願いする。私が死んだ後にどなたでもよろしいからこの遺書を世間に発表していただきたい。当世の学問をした人は或は笑われるかも知れぬが、しかし……
