Anna Katharina Emmerick, incompresa monaca morta nel 1824, ebbe il dono della visione: vide come realtà del presente non solo quel che era ontano nello spazio ma anche ciò che lo era nel tempo. Di questo dono nessuno fra coloro che la circondavano si curò. Soppresso il suo convento, rifugiata in una misera abitazione, fu scoperta da Clemente Brentano, laico, uomo colto e pio. Le visioni sulla vita di Gesù Cristo furono pubblicate a Parigi nel 1860, in sei volumi.
