Jake Wyler bought a cemetery. It was one of those impulse buys and now he was having to spend a large portion of his life savings to be a property owner. He had returned to his hometown to find his life turned upside down and involved in murder, missing money, and love letters. He meets an old high school classmate, and she handles his money in the bank where she works. Jake has no idea how to run a cemetery, and since the former owner was murdered, he was now really lost.

Going back to the old office to get ready to move, they find a woman crying at Gus' door. She has a problem: She doesn't know where her husband is at. Did he run off with another woman or is he dead in a shallow grave? They were able to get the story from her despite all the crying she was doing, and Gus took the case.

Dex was given a job to do - a hit on a state senator - and in his research he met a woman who had an incriminating video of the senator in bed with two women. The woman wanted to blackmail the senator so she would have the cash to move away from the state. Unfortunately, she was murdered, which didn't make Dex very happy. Now he had to shoot the senator and go after the men who killed the woman.

She was reading the sign in the window telling the world that a private investigator worked there. Gus could see she was homeless and went to open the door as she stood looking apprehensive. She finally came in and told Gus about how she wanted to find her mother who gave her up for adoption when she was a child. The girl lived on the streets most of her life and wanted a family now.

In this third of the Doyle, P.I. books, Doyle is hired by the curator of a Detroit Art Gallery. It seems nine valuable Egyptian statues were stolen from the gallery. They were replaced with fakes, and the gallery doesn't want the Egyptians to know their artifacts are missing. So Doyle and his partner Oscar Drew go on a hunt for the missing objects.

Halloween is a time for children to go door to door trick-or-treating. For Doyle and his girlfriend, Poppy, it's a time to catch a ghost. Poppy is investigating an insurance claim of a woman who says she was pushed down a flight of stairs by a ghost in a posh but very old hotel in Detroit. She enlists Doyle to help, and they try to get to the bottom of the claim.
