Jean-Paul Sartre, misschien wel de intellectueel van de 20e eeuw, was daar het bekendste voorbeeld van, maar ook Albert Camus, Raymond Aron, Michel Foucault en de van oorsprong Bulgaarse Tzvetan Todorov wisten de geest van de tijd niet alleen te verwoorden maar ook vorm te geven.

De moderne mens is een paradoxaal wezen dat - hoe rationeel ook - bij de diepste levensbeslissingen liever op het gevoel dan op de rede terugvalt. Hij doorziet de natuur wetenschappelijk, maar laat zich even graag door haar overweldigen. Hij kan (bijna) alles, maar weet niet of hij ook alles mág. In deze collegeserie laat Ger Groot zien welke filosofische ideeën de mens gevormd hebben tot het wezen dat hij nu is. In veel muziekwerken resoneren filosofische gedachten mee die deze ontwikkeling illustreren.
