Gran parte de estos cuentos giran en torno al cumplimiento de un destino que se repite y que suele prefigurar un enfrentamiento. A veces los protagonistas son los hombres, como en «El otro duelo» o «Guayaquil»; otras son sus armas: dos cuchillos que se buscan largamente hasta por fin encontrarse y pelear.

En «El otro», el propio Borges se encuentra con su alter ego. «Ulrica» -su único relato de amor- cuenta la historia de un enamoramiento en apariencia efímero. «El Congreso» describe una empresa tan vasta que se confunde con el cosmos. «Undr» y «El espejo y la máscara» imaginan literaturas que constan de una sola palabra. «El libro de arena», en cambio, se centra en un volumen de incalculables hojas, monstruoso, que anida en la Biblioteca Nacional de Buenos Aires: sin principio ni fin, infinito y eterno como toda la obra borgeana.

Dice Borges que las páginas de este libro son el irresponsable juego de un tímido que no se animó a escribir cuentos y que se distrajo en falsear y tergiversar historias ajenas. Historias de infames: ladrones, rufianes, piratas, traidores. Aquí están, entre otros, el atroz Lazarus Morell, redentor de esclavos.
