Der Christ - so der Apostel Paulus - ist zeitlebens auf Pilgerfahrt. So kannte das christliche Abendland von seinen Anfängen an das gläubige Unterwegssein zu einem Ort der Heilsvermittlung. Anfangs war das Ziel Jerusalem, der "Urpilgerort" doch schon bald kam auch Santiago hinzu, der heute wohl berühmteste Pilgerort Europas. Die Pilgerfahrt hatte für das reisefreudige und multikulturelle Mittelalter eine enorme Breitenwirkung. Hunderttausende zogen über die Via S. Jacobi.
