Patrick Hamilton is renowned for his gritty, slice-of-life tales chronicling the hopes, dreams and obsessions of London's working class in the inter-war years. Patrick Hamiltons Theaterstück "Cocktail für eine Leiche" erschien 1929 unter dem Titel "Rope" und wurde noch im gleichen Jahr in London und am Broadway uraufgeführt. Auch die Handlung spielt 1929, in einem Londoner Wohnhaus. Hier haben die Studenten Brandon und Granillo gerade den vermeintlich perfekten Mord verübt. Das Opfer, ihren Kommilitonen Ronald, verstauen sie in einer Truhe im Wohnzimmer. Ronald hatte ihnen nie etwas getan. Es gibt kein Motiv - außer zu "beweisen", dass unentdeckter Mord möglich ist und herauszufinden, wie morden sich anfühlt.

In Craven House, among the shifting, uncertain world of the English boardinghouse, with its sad population of the shabby genteel on the way down and the eternal optimists who would never get up or on, the young Patrick Hamilton, with loving, horrified fascination, first mapped out the territory that he would make uniquely his own. Although many of Hamilton's lifelong interests are here, they are handled with a youthful brio and optimism conspicuously absent from his later work.
