Eleven-year-old Tippy Chan lives in a small town in a quiet part of the world - where her uncle Pike escaped from the first chance he got as a teenager. An odd group gathers for an English country house weekend party: a sickly host, a disgraced socialite, an amateur detective and her nephew, a murderous couple, an ex-army captain, and a former militant suffragist countess.
