The Black Sapphire was a concept that Ruth toyed with for a few years. She studied dialect to help enhance one of the main characters, "Mattie." In the story, an unsolved crime shows its ugly face when Detective Adam Reynoir starts investigating. Mattie, the home's housekeeper, and her son, Jarell, decide that they are going to continue staying in the home, even after the dismembering murders have been cleaned up. As the story unfolds, Mattie takes Detective Reynoir on a tour of the home, trying to get him to understand in her way that the murders were no accident.

Jennifer McCain has dealt with more than her fair share of mishaps over time. Her wife’s ex, institutionalized for attempted murder, seems to be the ultimate culprit yet is unable to perform the crimes that she has been accused of. Her health has failed her miserably, but Jenny has insisted that Casey is out to get her still. But if Casey is locked away, how can Jenny even think it would be her?

Brianna is an author, hunkered in her cabin for relaxation and work. She uses the cabin as her office and her home, away from the hustle from the city. Divorced and focused, Brianna wants nothing to do but to take care of her world. She enjoys the nature around her and what it provides, until her ex-husband comes knocking down her door. Her Southern ways taught her many things, including ignoring people she doesn’t want to be around or talk to. Nathaniel brings bad news from the lower country, cuing Brianna to pack and go with him to her father.

Angelique wants nothing more than to meet her personal Prince Charming. She becomes involved in a domestic case, and the officer in the case takes a liking to her stern attitude and brilliance in domestic law. Frederick comes back after being shunned and verbally excused from this teacher’s presence. She is aware of everything, except that he is readily and eagerly interested in her. After accepting a hasty date decision, Angelique decides that maybe a Prince Charming may come to her after all.

When an old girlfriend from the past comes back into his life, Logan finds time is not of the essence. She is lost, upset, and mute. To top it off, she is definitely not the girl she once was. Her loud, political ways from college are gone, leaving her a frail and extremely timid woman with extreme mental issues. After contacting the police, Logan is connected with the forensic psychologist. Seeing the woman in slight distress although Logan has offered her a meal, a shower, and clothing, Doctor Shiles insists they discuss her issues back at his office.
