Anno 999. Il monaco Galdinius, insieme con altri due confratelli, decide di trasformare la torre di Torba, nei pressi di Varese, in un monastero. Con l'aiuto dei contadini locali e in particolare del longobardo Wilfredo, capo del villaggio vicino, il monastero diventa il fulcro attorno a cui rifioriscono il territorio circostante e la comunità. Per ottenere un supporto nelle numerose attività intraprese, Galdinius chiede e ottiene dalla madre badessa del vicino convento di Caira che otto delle sue monache si trasferiscano a Torba.
