Bookish high school student Rintaro Natsuki is about to close the secondhand bookstore he inherited from his beloved bookworm grandfather. Then, a talking cat appears with an unusual request. The feline asks for — or rather, demands — the teenager’s help in saving books with him. The world is full of lonely books left unread and unloved, and the cat and Rintaro must liberate them from their neglectful owners.

An asthma condition prevents thirteen-year-old Nanami from playing sports or spending time with her friends after school. But nothing can stop her from one of her favorite activities. Nanami loves to read and happily spends much of her free time in the school library, cocooned among the stacks. Then one day, Nanami notices that, despite the library being as deserted as ever, some of her favorite books are disappearing from the shelves. When she alerts the library staff, they dismiss her concerns. But just as Nanami is about to return to her reading, she spots a suspicious man in a gray suit.

Nanami ama i libri fin da quando era bambina: orfana di madre, e con un padre spesso assente, è abituata alla solitudine e adora passare i pomeriggi in biblioteca. Leggere è diventato per lei un piacere irrinunciabile e un modo per superare gli ostacoli provocati da una forte asma che le impedisce di correre, saltare e vivere come gli altri ragazzini della sua età: grazie alla lettura, può invece esplorare mondi diversi e straordinari. Un giorno, però, nella biblioteca che frequenta quotidianamente, i libri iniziano a sparire.

Une ode merveilleuse à la lecture et à l'imagination faisant écho au "Petit Prince"... Rintarô Natsuki, lycéen flegmatique, est sur le point de fermer la librairie héritée de son grand-père quand il reçoit une visite inattendue. Au milieu des livres, il découvre un gros chat brun tigré, un chat qui parle ! Et ce félin exprime une requête plutôt inhabituelle : il demande - ou plutôt exige - l'aide de l'adolescent pour aller sauver des livres.

La libreria Natsuki è un luogo speciale: un negozio polveroso e solitario, dove gli amanti della lettura possono trovare, tra le pagine dei grandi capolavori di tutto il mondo, un'oasi di pace, un rifugio lontano dal frastuono della quotidianità. Quando il proprietario, uomo colto e appassionato, muore improvvisamente, il nipote Rintaro, un ragazzino timido e introverso, eredita la libreria. Il nonno si è preso cura di lui dopo la morte di sua madre e, ora che è scomparso, Rintaro deve imparare a fare a meno della sua saggezza dolce e pacata.

A livraria Natsuke era uma loja de livros usados quase fora da cidade. Quem passava por lá via estantes que iam do chão até o teto, abarrotadas das mais maravilhosas obras literárias. Rintaro Natsuki amava aquele lugar, erguido pelo trabalho do avô que o criou, com todo o seu coração–passou muitas horas felizes lendo o que desejava por aqueles corredores. A livraria era o refúgio perfeito para o garoto doce, porém recluso.
