L'essenza dell'Abruzzo è declinata in questa novella nei suoi peculiari aspetti culturali. Lo sguardo attento e compiaciuto di Valerio Di Stefano ci accompagna attraverso le viuzze di un paesino dove la vita scorre ancora lenta, tra i profumi e i sapori di una terra "forte e gentile" come i suoi abitanti. "Lo schiaffatone" si differenzia completamente dalle precedenti narrazioni, mantenendo però il solito marchio di fabbrica: un'ironia inconfondibile e sottile che, in queste pagine, diventa bonaria ed empatica.

"Metello" è un romanzo storico di formazione che seguendo le vicende di un eroe popolare abbraccia un arco di tempo che va dal 1875 al 1902, il periodo forse più difficile e complesso della storia italiana dopo l'Unità: gli anni delle violente repressioni governative nei confronti degli operai, che organizzandosi per la prima volta in sindacati, assumono progressiva e decisa coscienza dei propri diritti, si identificano in un partito unitario e scoprono una nuova arma: lo sciopero.

"Il Gattopardo" è un romanzo di Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa che narra le trasformazioni avvenute nella vita e nella società in Sicilia durante il Risorgimento, dal momento del trapasso del regime borbonico alla transizione unitaria del Regno d'Italia, seguita alla spedizione dei Mille di Garibaldi. Dopo i rifiuti delle principali case editrici italiane (Mondadori, Einaudi, Longanesi), l'opera fu pubblicata postuma da Feltrinelli nel 1958, un anno dopo la morte dell'autore. Il tema della cucina nel romanzo e ai tempi in cui si svolge l'azione non è stato abbastanza investigato.
