Set at a small, affluent liberal-arts college in New England at the height of the Reagan '80s, The Rules of Attraction is a startlingly funny, kaleidoscopic novel about three students with no plans for the future - or even the present - who become entangled in a curious romantic triangle.

It's tough for 11-year-old Ned to stop eating. At four-feet-eight inches tall he weighs one 109 pounds, and he keeps growing - wider. When his parents send him to a summer diet camp, he and his bunkmates can't quite give up their old habits. Jeremy Simms watches from the porch of the general store as the weekly bus from Jackson comes through his town. Charlie doesn't intend to leave, but when he is accidentally thrust outside, he awakens to the alien surroundings of a world to which he's never before been exposed. Though haunted by hallucinations, fear of the basement, and his father's rage, Charlie must find a way to survive in his new world. He has escaped his past, but his journey has just begun.
