Rev Prof Alexander Balmain Bruce (1831-1899) was a Scottish theologian and minister of the Free Church of Scotland. Published in 1871, The Training of the Twelve is an ambitious biography and classic study of Jesus' selection and training of his apostles. A chapter is dedicated to each of the 12 (Bruce includes sound arguments on the identity of the three unnamed apostles) in which the different traits and circumstances of each apostle is discussed. 

A Farewell to Arms is a semi-autobiographical work by Ernest Hemingway. The novel was first serialized in Scribner's Magazine in the May 1929 to October 1929 issues, and published as a book in September that year. Set in the Italian campaign during World War I, the narrative is a first-person account by Frederic Henry who serves as an ambulance driver and falls in love with the beautiful English nurse Catherine Barkley.

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia.

Edwin Lefevre was a stockbroker and an independent investor, as well as a novelist and writer of short stories. This lightly fictionalized account of the career of stock speculator Jesse Livermore was first published in 1923. Now, nearly 100 years later, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator remains highly recommended for an understanding of investment. Lefevre’s trading advice and analyses of market price movements are as relevant today as in 1923.

The work contains many passages on reading, self-improvement, and the art of conversation, and it has become one of the most famous and influential exemplars of an autobiography ever written.

Lays of Ancient Rome is an 1842 collection of narrative poems by Thomas Babington Macaulay. Four of these: Horatius, The Battle of Lake Regillus, Virginia and The Prophecy of Capys cover heroic episodes from early Roman history. They have brief introductions that treat the legends from a scholarly perspective. Two others deal with more recent historical events: Ivry, a Song of the Huguenots, deals with French history, and The Armada: A Fragment, is about the Spanish fleet sent to subdue England.

The Island of Doctor Moreau is an 1896 science-fiction novel by the English author H. G. Wells (1866-1946). The story is narrated by Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man rescued by a passing boat and left on the island home of Doctor Moreau. One day, he tells them that time is a navigable fourth dimension, displaying a little model of a time machine. At dinner the following week, he entertains the guests with a remarkable tale. Having moved far into the future, he encounters the lovely garden world of the childlike Eloi and the brutal Morlocks who live underground.

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography, and autobiography. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne.

The classic dog story Stickeen is John Muir's account of what happened on an Alaskan glacier with a little dog named Stickeen. One day, Muir went exploring a large glacier during a blizzard, with Stickeen in tow. They became stranded, and the only way out was across a precarious ice bridge. Both man and dog escaped, and this triumph changed Stickeen from a rather aloof canine into a devoted companion. Muir called his adventure with Stickeen "the most memorable of all my wild days”, and wrote that the little dog enlarged his life by extended its boundaries.

My First Summer in the Sierra is based on a diary Muir kept while tending sheep in Yosemite country and is filled with the author’s awe for the “divine, enduring, unwasteable wealth” of the natural world. It remains a classic of environmental literature and continues to inspire people.

The Sun-Dog Trail by Jack London is set in the harsh wilderness of the Alaskan Yukon. The story is told by the friend of an Indian guide named Sitka Charlie who is paid by a white woman to take her on a sled journey of 1,500 miles. Sitka Charlie buys dogs and a sled and they travel over to Indian River, to Sulphur Creek, to Dominion, and back across the divide to Dawson. There, a man, John Jones, joins them. They follow the trail of another man to the Bering Straits where someone is killed....
