Dans "Tartarin de Tarascon", Alphonse Daudet nous contait les aventures d'un fier-à-bras provençal, chef putatif des "chasseurs de casquettes", courant l'Algérie à la poursuite de lions chimériques. Mais dans cette deuxième épopée burlesque, l'auteur s'écarte quelque peu du genre héroï-comique pour se rapprocher de celui - plus ironique - de la satire naturaliste. Son tranche-montagne perd peu à peu de sa superbe et de son enthousiasme, et il finit fâché devant le spectacle navrant d'une Suisse transformée en parc d'attraction par ses habitants.
