Our family of five was diagnosed with cancer on January 18th, 2013, when Justin (married father of 3) went to the doctor due to days of vomiting and chest pains. Justin was recovering from the flu the previous week and still had not recovered. Years of intermittent chest pains were explained when a CT Scan was performed at the local Emergency Room on that fateful day. A tumor that measured almost 20cm in size was found in his left lung and the family’s life was forever changed. After a long process of attempting to diagnose the tumor that included sending it to the Mayo Clinic for expert opinion it was determined that the tumor was an “Askins Sarcoma”. This sarcoma is part of the “Ewings Family” of tumors and is usually found in children and teenagers. Justin’s left lung was being crushed by the tumor and it had also displaced his heart. The treatment recommended included 17 cycles of chemotherapy every 3 weeks (total of 51 weeks) and surgical intervention with a possibility of radiation as well. As the sole income provider for this family of five this was a stiff blow to the family’s lifestyle as he was not allowed to work during the treatment. In May 2013 the financial struggles intensified as Justin was let go from his job of 6 years with one of the largest auto insurance providers in the United States. It was around this time that Justin started to feel a calling in his life to do something to help people in situations similar to his. This is when his idea for FamiliesFightingCancer.com began. The initial goal of FamiliesFightingCancer.com is to help Justin and his family through the final months of his treatment until he can possibly be cleared to return to work. Paying a mortgage, medical bills and credit cards, etc. off of Social Security is a little difficult and all help from donations are needed to survive. This is a very short-term initial phase of the website. The next goal is for FamiliesFightingCancer.com is to become an authority on the subject of cancer, cancer support and resources for families that are dealing with the cancer diagnosis of a loved one. The final goal for FamiliesFightingCancer.com is to become a financial resource for families that are fighting cancer to help with medical bills, mortgage payments, car payments, groceries, etc. The idea being that so much help is available to fund the research of defeating cancer but not much is done to assist those that are fighting it now. FamiliesFightingCancer.com is the calling of Justin and his family and they hope to be able to assist as many people as possible in the future of the company. In "My Cancer Chronicles" Justin tells the story of his fight with cancer from just before diagnosis throughout the treatment process and (hopefully) life after cancer. "Being Diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma" is the first in this series.
