Dr. Vicente Simón was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1946. He studied in his hometown and got his PhD in Medicine in 1973. He worked as a research assistant (Wissenschaftlicher Assistent) in the Department of Physiology at the Ruhr University Bochum (Germany) where he first became interested in the study of behavior. After returning to Valencia he specialized in Psychiatry and began teaching Physiological Psychology in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Valencia. Apart from taking on the teaching of Physiological Psychology as a University Professor, he founded a research laboratory on this subject matter and was Director of the Psychobiology Department until 2003. He obtained the title of Assistant Professor of Physiological Psychology in 1981 and in 1983 he became Professor of Psychobiology. During his university career he carried out research on behavioral pharmacology, publishing numerous scientific papers. For the last 20 years he has been dedicated to the study of consciousness and the practice of meditation, participating in courses and retreats, both nationally and internationally. In 2007 he published the review “Mindfulness and neurobiology”, which highlighted the most significant advances in this interdisciplinary field. He is a founding member and President of the Association of Mindfulness and Health (AMYS), a non-profit-making organization dedicated to the promotion and training of health professionals who are interested in integrating mindfulness in their clinical practice. He currently runs courses and leads meditation groups, particularly for mental health-care professionals.
