On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Histoire
From the towering heights of Olympos Mons on Mars, the mighty Zeus and his immortal family of gods, goddesses, and demigods look down upon a momentous battle, observing - and often influencing - the legendary exploits of Paris, Achilles, Hector, Odysseus, and the clashing armies of Greece and Troy. Thomas Hockenberry, former 21st-century professor and Iliad scholar, watches as well. It is Hockenberry's duty to observe and report on the Trojan War's progress to the so-called deities who saw fit to return him from the dead.

The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Dan Simmons is an absolute master at crafting otherworldly experiences, the Hyperion Cantos should be held at such high esteem to be equal with the works of Asimov and Herbert. An incredible story from start to finish.

Great ending to the Cantos
This book was fantastic, though I admit I had to stop halfway through and listen to another book before continuing on. In many ways I found the book more slow-paced and frustratingly opaque than the previous ones, but perhaps that's the point, mirroring how Raul feels. Once I got into the book again it was hard to put down. Although Endymion and the Rise of Endymion are probably not quite as good as Hyperion and the Fall of Hyperion, it is undoubtedly worth reading the whole series.
