À propos de cet audio

National Bestseller
A New Yorker Best Book of 2024

A “thought-provoking and timely” (The Times, London) global history of witch trials across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, told through thirteen distinct trials that illuminate a pattern of demonization and conspiratorial thinking that has profoundly shaped human history.

This “inventive and compelling” (The Times Literary Supplement, London) work of social history travels through thirteen witch trials across history, some famous—like the Salem witch trials—and some lesser-known: on Vardø island, Norway, in the 1620s, where an indigenous Sami woman was accused of murder; in France in 1731, during the country’s last witch trial, where a young woman was pitted against her confessor and cult leader; in Lesotho in 1948, where British colonial authorities executed local leaders. Exploring how witchcraft was feared, then decriminalized, and then reimagined as gendered persecution, Witchcraft takes on the intersections between gender and power, indigenous spirituality and colonial rule, political conspiracy and individual resistance.

Offering a striking, dramatic journey unspooling over centuries and across continents, Witchcraft is a “well-rounded insight into some of the strangest and cruelest moments in history” (Buzz Magazine), giving voice to those who have been silenced by history.

Wish I had more stars to give

Brilliant. I've consumed a lot of material on the witch trials yet much of this was new to me, and all of it was told in fascinating, factual prose. As 2024 nears its close, I can honestly say this is my #1 book of the year (I average 1-2 reads a week). Found myself a new favorite author. Well done to the narrator too.

If you’re curious about witches and their history: it’s a must !!

I loved this! I’ve always had a fascination over witches, witchcraft and their history. I grew up in Ireland so as a young girl in a very old country there were so many tales and folklores going around.

Well-researched. Agenda-driven.

This collection of 13 witch trials - including some involving male "magicians" and 20th-century cases - is Information-packed and admirably honest. Marion Gibson is an amateur historian fascinated with the subject matter who did her level best to document the events and discuss the reasoning employed by witch-hunters. She clearly points out where documentation (e.g. trial transcripts) is absent, what the sociopolitical/religious environs were like, and where there is controversy.
Less fortunately, her vocabulary/prose is limited, her approach is so clinical that it often borders on the yawn-worthy, and she hammers so hard on the misogyny aspects of prosecution that the book frequently sounds "feminist".

As to presentation: I was impressed with reader Rose Akroyd. She didn't do anything particularly noteworthy.. but her diction, timbre, cadence, and tone were praiseworthy. Akroyd's evident interest in the text doubtless makes this audiobook version of 'Witchcraft: A History in Thirteen Trials' better than an eBook/paper iteration.

I rate this audiobook 5.5 stars out of 10. If you can get it off of the 'Plus' menu, it's a reasonable way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons. If they ask for a Credit, you have better options.

[Note: Spending half of a chapter describing the plot of a movie about a witch in Africa is an odd writing choice]
