In South Carolina, particularly in Charles Town, in January 1775 preparations for war are well underway, Peggy Monaghan's two brothers drill with the militia, and Peggy's two best friends have much to discuss over tea, except when Peggy is expected to stay a few months each year on her father's indigo plantation. As war clouds gather, a number of the wealthy young South Carolinians sent abroad for their education have left off swashbuckling through society in London and Edinburgh and are coming home to join the Patriot cause. Among them is Ned Forsythe, the youngest brother of Peggy's close friend Anne, but, having been obliged to marry in England, he almost at once goes north to join the Continental Army and escape the wagging tongues of Charles Town. An impending attack by British warships in early summer of 1776 brings him back, and, inevitably he and Peggy fall in love in a world complicated by two more British attacks, the brutal British occupation, and the iron clad code of honor that held sway in the society of the 18th century.

It seems the young prince is unhappy because he thinks not all is right in his beautiful city. But people will not tell their Prince if something is wrong. Can Andy help? The second mission with Pres Hooper unwittingly attached to it begins when Pres flies off to Ireland to console his sister Mary Sue after an unexpected and tragic turn of events. Dan O'Donovan's control sends Dan along to find out what so unexpectedly went wrong and to investigate his theory that the reason hostilities in Northern Ireland between Catholics and Protestants continue to flare up because there are a few individuals deliberately fanning the flames for their own purposes. Dan is to try to confirm the theory and act accordingly.

In Istanbul Dan deals with the situation and with Pres who is, as usual, clueless about what else Dan does for a living.

However, according to legend there are three, and they are said to belong to the so-called gods of Ubar. A wizard knows the dangers of meddling in such matters, whether you happen to believe in those gods or not. A legend is a legend, and a curse is a curse. Naturally, Tarquin Rafi doesn't listen. He's already found two keys and is about to steal the third.

This mission is initiated when an elusive, unidentified terrorist organizer kills yet another agent sent to kill him and Colonel Garrison at last receives a photo, although no name, that might actually be authentic, as well as a home base in Spain and the information of a tie to the ETA, a Basque group whom some experts call the best-trained terrorists in the world, which is probably all too authentic. On this mission in spite of Dan's protests, the Colonel has attached Dan’s department store business partner, Pres Hooper, who is clueless as to Dan's real "business" in Spain. But Pres is eager to go for he has been told that Spain is the land of romance, his kind of place. The mission goes very wrong within the first few hours and Pres is not exactly helping. Nor are either Dan or Pres pleased to see Pres’ sister, tweedy, tally-ho Mary Sue, arrive in Madrid.

Patti has found that having a "keen, analytical mind" as her teachers call it might be a great help studying science which she loves but it has not done much for her social life. The summer camping trip with her two cousins, Jolene and Juliebelle, was supposed to help, but camping with two battling sisters is no help for anything. The same day a beautiful young woman, screaming and resisting, is brought to the convent and Lucia is taken away by her father to his castle.

Andy and his dog Shadow like to go wandering. Usually, they find someone who needs help and Andy is always willing to do what he can. Sometimes that works out and sometimes it does not. In this tale, they find themselves in a beautiful orchard owned by a very large giant. When Andy agrees to watch the orchard while the giant goes to visit his sister, he has no idea how much trouble this would be. But as in all the tales, there is a common sense lesson to be learned

Andy and Shadow are walking along a beautiful lake when they hear very strange noises coming from a palace. Who lives in the palace? Prince Sidney Sutton, who has so many pushbutton boxes that he can play any game, be a rock star, fly to the moon. Andy sees a problem with all those boxes, but does Sidney? Can Andy explain it? On Andy's adventures, one never knows.

There has to be a reason for learning, and it has to be one that makes sense to the learner. The purpose of education is not to preserve the good old days nor is it to create a Utopia in the midst of our imperfect society. The mission of a school is to provide education, the kind of education that helps each child explore and develop his or her individual abilities. We've lost sight of that. And until we "fix" that, we will not fix the system. It cannot be fixed by band-aids nor by bandwagons. But it can be addressed with common sense and a willingness to evict a few sacred cows from the pastures.
