Ryokan (1758–1831) is, along with Dogen and Hakuin, one of the three giants of Zen in Japan. When he graduated from Columbia in 1958, John Giorno was handsome, charismatic, ambitious, and eager to soak up as much of Manhattan's art and culture as possible. The 1590s were bleak years for England. The queen was old, the succession unclear, and the treasury empty after decades of war.
