About this listen

Larger-than-life characters and an epic plot brimming with the energy of his internationally acclaimed thrillers make Ken Follett's A Place Called Freedom an experience not to be missed. This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it. Spanning two continents and bringing together an unforgettable cast of heroes, villains, and rebels, A Place Called Freedom is a magnificent epic of love, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Narrator Simon Prebble's masterful use of voice and pacing captures a vivid cast of characters and the powerful destiny that shapes their lives.

Folett never disappoints

Mr. Folett once again tells a wonderful tale of lifes struggles and unfairness purpetuated by our species. And again I've learned historical detail I never knew. A very enjoyable and satisfying entertainment.

Excellent story and best narrator ever!

The story is captivating and the narration was outstanding; the perfect tone, intonation, pace, and pauses made this narrator my absolute favorite of all time. Ken Follett is my favorite author...he never fails to deliver.

A place called freedom

I have read many books by this author and I have never been disappointed. This book was historical and I learned many things about how the English, when they took over Scotland and how the Scottish were made slaves in the coal mines. It makes me feel bad about part of my heritage. I highly recommend this book. The narration was excellent as was the story.

One of the best titles in my library.

I have several hundred audible books in my library now and I would consider this to be one of the best. It’s just one of those books you can’t stop listening to until you get to the end.

Plus the narration could not be better!!

Great listen/read

Working my way through Ken Follett’s novels. Most enjoyable. Shorter than others but no less enjoyable. Would be nice to see future novels on this storyline. Highly recommended.
Narrator Simon Prebble excellent.

Great Audible!

Really good story line. I was shocked when it ended, it seemed like there was going to be so much more! The reader's voice was very versatile though it I had to laugh every time he did the main woman character's voice. It was pretty silly. But I highly recommend this audible.

Gripping historical fiction

Followed several great characters from the coal mines of Scotland to 18th Century London and then on to a tobacco plantation in Virginia, just prior to the revolutionary war. It is a great story about the main character ‘s search for freedom. It was very enjoyable.

Excellent...but...

I wanted more! Their story isn't over yet. I'm invested...is there a part 2?
