About this listen

My name is Brett. I'm a college-educated man who was once a husband of 26 years with two children, three businesses, and a large home with an actual white picket fence. I'm also a drug addict. And I have a tale to tell.

My story has everything: sex, death, pain, atheism, God, jail, marriage, divorce, heresy, homosexuality, physics, traffic fatalities, computer science, video games, cinnamon toothpicks, Barry Manilow, Nine Inch Nails, pornography, breasts, used tampons, strippers, venereal disease, abortion, prostitutes, AIDS, racism, suicide, infidelity, public nudity, anti-Semitism, marijuana, alcohol, pawn shops, drug dealers, needles, acid, ecstasy, crack, heroin, pain pills, withdrawal, interventions, rehabs, product tampering, road rage, vandalism, elderly abuse, grave desecration, arson, identity theft, burglary, armed robbery, and murder.

But more importantly, it's about the despair of addiction and the absolute certainty that it can be overcome. Recovery is not simply abstinence, but a process of growing up. I spent my entire life searching for the key to long-term sobriety. I would like to share with you what I have learned.

Mesmerizing

A brave memoir that must have been difficult to write. Well written and well narrated. Harrowing and painful to hear at times but an important memoir by an intelligent guy whose struggle with addition brought him to a number of personal lows. A great book .

Addicting like drugs.

A brutally honest look at a white suburban dad's crippling drug addiction. The book explains the slow descent into the insanity of drug dependence, the thinking behind the madness, and the reasons it's so hard to stop. Brett's story parallels the highs and lows of his drug addiction with its laugh-out-loud scenarios and devastating consequences. I thought the narrator's voice fit the story quite well and really brought the scenes to life. If you like crazy true stories, give this a listen!

Hit home

unfortunately this story is the reality for many in active addiction . nothing matters but the next fix. remorse is there , but no action is taken. it can happen to anyone. the slope is slippery. learn from Bret and stay away from the flame because you WILL get burned 🔥

Heart achingly real

This was a tough book to go through, in having my own struggles with addiction my entire life (not to the degree of this book by any means) but to see inside the life of someone who made the decision to go that far was heart achingly real. What a hard thing to come back from. Would love to see another book of his current situation. That to me would be the real end of the story.

Narcissistic casual racist

The author uses the « n » word not just once but several times in the book. He’s a white man, for the record
