About this listen

Hugo Award Winner for Best Series

The second book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Caliban's War shows a solar system on the brink of war, and the only hope of peace rests on James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante's shoulders. Now a Prime Original series.

We are not alone.

On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes and threatening to spread out into the solar system.

In the vast wilderness of space, James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante have been keeping the peace for the Outer Planets Alliance. When they agree to help a scientist search war-torn Ganymede for a missing child, the future of humanity rests on whether a single ship can prevent an alien invasion that may have already begun...

Just wow.. All of it.. Narration was excellent. Just wow, this story is simply amazing. Eagerly awaiting my next credit for the third book. It's not even a debate in my mind.

Magnificent story.

Having watched the TV show first, the audiobook adds so much more nuances to the characters. The narrator nails the voices and characters and ofcourse the story is awesome.

The amazing saga continues

Like most people, I watched the TV series of The Expanse before starting the books. A lot of the show's events are in these books, but there is a great deal more character detail and nuanced lore presented in here than they could have been expected to put in the show. If you're someone who is invested in the universe, you should go through this series.

Jefferson Mays does a great job at narration, but unfortunately, like the first book, the authors are bad at conveying dialogue between multiple characters. At least to me, the constant "he said", "she said", "they replied" in conversations between two characters that are easily identified throughout, both in general and because of Mays' distinct delivery for each, really gets on my nerves. You don't need to point out each time someone says something, we hear them saying it. Even in written form, there are better ways to do this, but for the audiobook, I would really have liked that bloat to have been edited out, since Mays had a distinct voice and tone for each character, making it obvious who is speaking. This is going to be a nitpick for many, but it's what holds me back from a full 5 star rating.

I still have many books to go, but so far, I'm still hooked on this.

Story was great narration weak at times

Story is absolutely great. Narrator had excellent voices when doing the characters. But the descriptions and inbetween was painfully slow at times. Had this weird Captain Kirk pausing effect in every sentence. I literally said out loud "get on with it" multiple times.

It doesn’t get better than this

Enough said. If you like hard sci-fi, listen to this audiobook. Some of the best writing out there.

loving it

Yaasss really enjoying this series! So grateful for good sci-fi. Riveting, multi-layered, and very creepy at times, on many levels. Started watching the show first, but very quickly remembered how much more I enjoy books than their onscreen counterparts. The narrator is just right -- changes the character voices enough to make them distinct, and I'll echo another reviewer when they said they appreciated him not pitching his voice for the female characters. Can't wait to start #3! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
