About this listen
From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.
HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.
The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.
When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.
Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.
Even he doesn’t suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors’ terrifying agenda.
Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity’s champion—and its betrayer.
This is where his story begins.
“No one builds a universe like James S. A. Corey. The Mercy of Gods is wilder and weirder than you can imagine, and when it ends, all you’ll want is … more.”—John Scalzi, New York Times bestselling author

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Lynesse is the lowly Fourth Daughter of the queen, and always getting in the way. But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she's an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). Although she still gets in the way, she understands that the only way to save her people is to invoke the pact between her family and the Elder sorcerer who has inhabited the local tower for as long as her people have lived here (though none in living memory has approached it).

Amazing
Strongly recommend.
First 4 chapters, I admit, were a slow start. Chapter 5 started to connect. Chapter 6 exploded. It turns out the groundwork had to be laid. The 30+ chapters onward were hands down among the best science fiction of any generation.
How does a writing duo meet expectations after something as epic as the Expanse? This book found a way. Unique approach (smaller character group, telling an equally massive story), deep characters, and a menagerie of highly satisfying cool alien elements, come together to feel at once entirely different but with the same voice and mastery.

Just great!
I haven't enjoyed a sci fi book as much since The Reality Dysfunction. Amazing concept, cracking characters, great story, good bit of science, and as well high stake philosophical conundrums/dilemmas (though I was enjoying the story too much to spend to much time thinking about those).

Not to the levels of The Expanse
Spoiler free
I felt that the book finished too early for my taste.
The characters are good, but I didn't get attached to any as much as I did in The Expanse.
I'll still follow the serie hoping for more developments.

Slow-Burn in all the good ways
Great entry to the new series. really sets the tone early and keeps you wondering what will happen next. Also, totally brutal at a few parts haha. phew Boi!
only point taken off was I had a hard time distinguishing different characters by the VA. VA is great and I really enjoyed their work with the Expanse series. maybe next book, more subtle accents or different tones?

Boring Start
I loved the Expanse and I’m excited to see where this new series goes. But I think it needed more to it. It felt very repetitive and lacking of good plot.
