About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An epic adventure about a female athlete perhaps past her prime, brought back to the tennis court for one last grand slam” (Elle), from the author of Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones & The Six, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

“A heart-filled novel about an iconic and persevering father and daughter.”—Time

“Gorgeous. The kind of sharp, smart, potent book you have to set aside every few pages just to catch your breath. I’ll take a piece of Carrie Soto forward with me in life and be a little better for it.”—Emily Henry, author of Book Lovers and Beach Read

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, PopSugar, Glamour, Reader’s Digest

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father, Javier, as her coach. A former champion himself, Javier has trained her since the age of two.

But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning player named Nicki Chan.

At thirty-seven years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record. Even if the sports media says that they never liked “the Battle-Axe” anyway. Even if her body doesn’t move as fast as it did. And even if it means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to: Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.

In spite of it all, Carrie Soto is back, for one epic final season. In this riveting and unforgettable novel, Taylor Jenkins Reid tells her most vulnerable, emotional story yet.

Carrie Soto [Is Back] . . . is like other sports novels in which underdogs punch, volley, bat and birdie their way to victory or additional defeat, but it goes beyond this to explore sexism and racism in the tennis world in the 1990s. . . . This novel will grab you. You’ll tear through blow-by-blow descriptions of championship matches on some of the most famous tennis courts in the world. . . .”The Washington Post

So much tennis…

Maybe I should have known but there’s a lot of tennis talk in this book. Haha. I’m not a big tennis fan so it was boring at times. I did appreciate her dedication and work ethic though and her fathers love for her. The narrator and production team did fantastic!

Another TJR masterpiece!!

Carrie Soto world champion tennis player. This is all about her professional development, love for tennis and what its like to rebuild and work on yourself as a returning older athlete after retirement.
The story starts off between carries childhood and the present moment as a world renouned tennis champion. A young child whos lost her mother and being raised by a father who loves the game of tennis. What its like not having a mother figure and no confidence; body image issues and also having to meet her fathers expectations throughout. Carries father becomes her coach throughout the most important and challenging matches, great dedication to the game. I love how the author pushes the issue of making peace with personal limitations when Carrie retires and returns to the game after 7 years well into her late 30s. She is faced with being the oldest in her game amongst a sport with young talent. There is lots of strategy, wins and losses. Such a great book. I cant say I particularly like sports but I must say reading was so interesting. I learned a lot about the game and really enjoyed this book. Would have loved a bit more spice with the romance in this book, although i understand it wasn't meant to be like her other romance books.
Taylor Jenkin Reid is a brilliant writer! 4.5 stars.

Obsessed

I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this book as I much as I did. Such a beautiful story and listening to the audiobook while reading the physical copy at the same time was an unreal experience.

Would listen again!

Loved everything about this book. Reid found a way to humanize Carrie after Malibu in a way that made me appreciate women in sports so much more. A new respect for tennis while being a heartwarming story of love, loss, grit and growth. Loved!

Carrie Soto was TOO unlikable

Seriously, I didn’t want to root for her at all. I know she’s supposed to be unlikable, but any character development was too little too late for me. Loved the setting, though, and the narration was on point!
