Publisher's Summary
NYPD Detective Alec MacAidan has always been good with weird. After all, his life has been a string of the unexplainable. But when an injured man gives him cryptic clues, then turns to dust in front of him, Alec's view on weird is changed forever.
Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent the last 1,000 years waiting for Alec. He'd been told his fated one would be a man wielding a shield, but he didn't expect him to be human, and he certainly didn't expect that shield to be a police badge.
Both men, strong-willed and stubborn, are still learning how to cope with the push and pull of being fated, when fate throws them another curveball.
Rumors have spread quickly of turmoil in Egypt. Covens are fleeing with news of a vampire who has a talent like no other, hell-bent on unleashing the wrath of Death.
Alec and Cronin are thrown into a world of weird Alec cannot imagine. What he learned in school of ancient pharaohs and Egyptian gods was far from the truth. Instead, he finds out firsthand that history isn't always what it seems.

Little hokey (but it’s vampires, just go with it!)
Super gold star for all the accent work from the narrator. It’s a vampire romance story, so remember it’s going to start out really hokey with a lot of stupid lore and vampires. But it’s otherwise a pretty decent story with fun characters and cool action.

The best is yet to come
I just finished the entire series, and even though this first book was a drag for me at first, by the end I was gripped. For me the issue with book 1 was struggling with all the exposition, and having too much complex information about their mission. All the books have a lot of research montages, and I found myself zoning out for those. But the build of the relationship between Alec, Cronin, and the others is breathtaking, and of course Master JL brings those voices to life like a magician. I’m definitely going to re-read the first book again with more interest because of making it to the last book.

Outstanding
Everything was great, loved the suspense and figuring everything out.
The performance was also fantastic, loved the identifiable carachters by the voice.

Narration was good
I gave it a four star primarily because of the narration the story was just OK, with the “fight scene“ being short and so anticlimactic it was sad, but overall it was OK and I enjoyed the accents.
I listened to the book at 1.2x speed.

Cheesy conspiracy theory and boring too
Overall, I really tried to like this book. In spite of the ridiculous premise of vampires hiding the "real history" and a Chosen One premise, I tried to get into it. I mean, it started off with a attention grabbing chase, but it truly went downhill from there. The main character alternated between being a whiny overwhelmed dunce and a "brilliant" competent person that somehow everyone listens to (having a photographic memory = genius apparently). This honestly was a waste of time and just dragged on. The story was slow, the action vanilla, and the romance felt like it was written by a teenager. Boring and cheesy, don't bother.
