About this listen

Number-one New York Times best-seller and the perfect holiday gift.

A Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick

"Beautifully written and incredibly funny, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is about the importance of friendship and human connection. I fell in love with Eleanor, an eccentric and regimented loner whose life beautifully unfolds after a chance encounter with a stranger; I think you will fall in love, too!" (Reese Witherspoon)

No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

The only way to survive is to open your heart.

What the critics say

"Move over, Ove (in Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove) - there's a new curmudgeon to love." (Booklist)

"Eleanor Oliphant is a truly original literary creation: funny, touching, and unpredictable. Her journey out of dark shadows is absolutely gripping." (Jojo Moyes, New York Times best-selling author of Me Before You)

"Narrator Cathleen McCarron's articulated British accent and studied pacing lend weight to Eleanor's apparent alienation from the world - and her immediate charm to listeners.... While supporting characters are well defined with distinct voices and accents, McCarron especially shines in setting the story's emotional tone." (AudioFile)

Editorial Review

At age 29, Eleanor Oliphant is convinced that she will marry Johnnie Lomond, the lead singer in a local band. The problem is that she has no friends, no social life and no interest in taking care of herself. But still, she tells herself that she is completely fine.

Gail Honeyman’s debut release, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, catapulted the Scottish writer to fame. Eleanor’s non-existent social skills, delusions regarding Johnnie, and strange relationship with her colleague all paint the portrait of a quirky character, all while her troubled past becomes clearer - and more disturbing. This emotional audiobook addresses themes of isolation and loneliness through the eyes of a young woman in moments of sadness and vulnerability, but also in contrasting moments of endearing humour and genuine love.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is beloved by critics and listeners young and old, and has received several awards, both as a debut release, but also alongside titles written by more seasoned writers. Actress Reese Witherspoon has often expressed her love for Eleanor and her production company has purchased rights to turn it into a feature film.

Narrator Cathleen McCarron is an immensely talented storyteller who brings Eleanor to life with her expressive voice and adds realism with her charming Scottish accent. She builds a vivid character who is cranky, anti-social, yet disarmingly loveable, ensuring listeners will become more and more emotionally invested by the minute. In fact, McCarron’s work on Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine won her not just an Audie Award, but also a British Book Award nomination, an AudioFile Earphones Award, and our very own Audible Best of the Year runner up award.

I think we all know an Eleanor Oliphant

This was a surprisingly good read! I was able to connect well with Eleanor and all the characters. I loved that the author was able to reverse Eleanor's awkward ways into thinking everyone else was peculiar, not her.
There were laugh out loud moments, awkward moments, compassionate moments, despairing moments, and if you are from the UK, an appreciation for the softly spoken Scottish dialect, and familiar terms.
I feel that the author's choice of making us aware of loneliness is important. I believe we all know an Eleanor Oliphant, someone who claims they are just fine, but lives an isolated life, who is a little different, but longs for acceptance, and love.
I would heartily recommend this book. I look forward to more from Gail Honeyman.

Great book!

I really loved this book. Beautiful and intriguing story from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this story about a woman who doesn't quite fit it and who overcomes a very difficult past.

Laugh out Loud and Cry a bit too..

It's a great story, laugh out loud as you see the world through the first person narration of Eleanor. You make friends with her, feel her anxiety, and recognize a bit of either yourself or someone you know. I really enjoyed it. The narration was spot on!
