Publisher's Summary

"Home Front is Hannah's crowning achievement."—The Huffington Post

In this powerhouse of a novel, Kristin Hannah explores the intimate landscape of a troubled marriage with this provocative and timely portrait of a husband and wife, in love and at war.

All marriages have a breaking point. All families have wounds. All wars have a cost. . . .

Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life—children, careers, bills, chores—even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then a deployment sends Jolene deep into harm's way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider, she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own—for everything that matters to his family.

At once a profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American family, Home Front is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor, and ultimately, hope.

"Hannah has written a remarkable tale of duty, love, strength, and hope that is at times poignant and always thoroughly captivating and relevant." —Library Journal (starred review)

What the critics say

“Kristin Hannah's Home Front, read with fine emotional nuance by Maggi-Meg Reed, is the kind of novel that grabs your heart as it draws you in…Keep the Kleenex close, and breathe through the lumps in your throat.” —Booklist

“The novel's second half, a moving exploration of the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder on an already shaky family dynamic, is especially well read by Maggi-Meg Reed, who inhabits all the voices and characters with skill and heartfelt emotion. A timely book that is highly recommended for all audiences.” —Library Journal, Starred Review

Heartfelt

This story really pulled on the heartstrings as a mother. I have so much respect for those who protect us and the profound sacrifice they make with not only their bodies and minds but their hearts. The author has painted a brutally honest depiction of home after war and any one who reads this book will be better for it and more understanding of the life changes these soldiers have had to endure. Great read, I will highly recommend it and will never forget it!

couldn't finish it

The narrator was great. I listened to over half of the book. Hardly a happy moment written to that point. I just had to give up. It's too depressing for me.

Amazing story

What a story. I laughed. I cried. I felt the pain of the characters. Each one had such a personality. One of those books that came alive.

Great story: sad, depressing, exciting, happy and full of love

Enjoyed this book but also hated it. PTSD is brutal and we all should know more about it and it’s affect on society. Tough topic but neatly tied up in a story I could relate to.

This is one of Kristin Hannah’s best books.

I absolutely lived this book! A book that brings me to tears tells me that I have completely engaged with the story. The family dynamics are spot on and I learned a lot about how commitment on several fronts can shape your life!!!

Enjoyable ...Kristin Hannah doesn't disappoint!

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I love the characters and the story line. However, I would suggest you read it rather than listen to it on Audible. This narrator is very annoying, especially when she changes her voice for different characters. The voice she used for the children was especially irritating!!!

She never disappoints!

This story is not for the faint of heart. I cried many times while listening in my car. Kristen expertly writes real people who can make you so angry and whom you can also come to love and forgive. A Brilliant talent

terrible narrator

love her books bit this one missed the mark for me. first part was good but then after main climax it dragged. and the narrators voice foe the kids and mother in law was so irritating. also whenever someone cried. it made me like the book even less!! have listened to tons of audio books and have never disliked a voice so much as the one for this book. her Joelene voice was ok but Lulu and Betsey. yikes. probably would give book a 3 if I had read hard copy.
