About this listen
The first novel in the Iron Druid Chronicles - introducing a cool, new, funny urban fantasy hero
Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.
Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power - plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish - to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.
Don’t miss any of Kevin Hearne’s phenomenal Iron Druid Chronicles novels:
Hounded | Hexed | Hammered | Tricked | Trapped | Hunted | Shattered | Staked

Story
Cutting a deal with a trickster god rarely goes well for any human brave or foolish enough to try it, but Atticus doesn’t feel like he has a choice. With members of the Norse pantheon out for his blood, he can’t train his apprentice in peace, so he asks Coyote to help him fake his own death. The cost, however, might wind up being every bit as high as if he’d made no deal at all.

The downside to faking your own death is that people tend to get upset when they find out they’ve been had. In Atticus O’Sullivan’s case, they’re upset enough to come after him to make sure he dies for real this time. Yet he can’t remain in hiding anymore: He has to bind his apprentice, Granuaile, to the earth so that she can become the first new Druid in centuries.

Story
For someone who’s been alive for two thousand years, Atticus O’Sullivan is a pretty fast runner. Good thing, because he’s being chased by not one but two goddesses of the hunt—Artemis and Diana—for messing with one of their own. Dodging their slings and arrows, Atticus, Granuaile, and his wolfhound, Oberon, are making a mad dash across modern-day Europe to seek help from a friend of the Tuatha Dé Danann. His usual magical option of shifting planes is blocked, so instead of playing hide-and-seek, the game plan is . . . run like hell.

What the critics say
"Hearne, a self-professed comic-book nerd, has turned his love of awesome dudes whacking mightily at evil villains into a superb urban fantasy debut.” (Publishers Weekly)
“A page-turning and often laugh-out-loud funny caper through a mix of the modern and the mythic.” (Ari Marmell, author of The Warlord’s Legacy)
“Kevin Hearne breathes new life into old myths, creating a world both eerily familiar and startlingly original.” (Nicole Peeler, author of Tempest Rising)

If you like Jim butcher, you'll enjoy this read!
Magic, mayhem and mythology in a modern world. If you know Harry Dresden, I feel like you'll enjoy this book.
Update: fair warning, I did not like the ending to this series and fell out of love around book 7. I was on vacation and made it through all 9. Overall I would not put this series anywhere on par with the Dresden Files. Some of the later characters are quite unlikeable and end up acting in a way that does not match their story progression or past experiences.
I would not recommend this series and wish I did not invest the time that spent with it, but that's just my opinion. If you end up enjoying it, I'm glad you had a good time :-)

Funny and an easy listen
Luke Daniels does a good job of sounding like a west Coast college drop out, with centuries of wisdom thrown into the mix when voicing Atticus. His impersonation of Oberon is also excellent. The story is a good mix of contemporary and ancient Druid, with enough historical figures and classic literature thrown in to appeal to intellectuals. The major issue I have with this book is that the language is simplistic, as are many of the jokes. A bit much slapstick there, that, were this a TV show, would be accompanied by canned laughter. It detracts from the otherwise interesting concept and approaches high school level, rather than a more sophisticated enjoyable Neil Stevenson or LOTR level.

Riveting
Fantastic modern fantasy, this story succeeds where many others fail. Atticus is believably badass without being untouchable, and Oberon is an adorable comic relief. Atticus doesn't feel like a Gary Stu despite being a powerful, ancient magical creature. I wish there was better development of female characters, and that they weren't all beautiful and perfect looking, but it certainly beats other authors' descriptions of "body like a runway model" or the size of breasts.
My main complaint is the narrator's heavy American accent and his awful attempts at foreign accents and Celtic words, making the protagonist and other characters sound like either psychotic leprechauns, or thick tongued idiots who can't speak their own native language.
