About this listen
New York Times best-selling author Jason Pargin’s hilarious and horrifying John Dies at the End series continues with If This Book Exists, You’re in the Wrong Universe.
"Pargin once again delights with scathing social commentary thinly disguised as an outrageous action novel.... This is a feast." (Publishers Weekly)
If the broken neon signs, shuttered storefronts, and sub-standard housing didn’t tip you off, you’ve just wandered into the city of “Undisclosed”. You don’t want to be caught dead here, because odds are you just might find yourself rising from the grave. That hasn’t stopped tourists from visiting to check out the unusual phenomena that hangs around our town like radioactive fallout. Interdimensional parasites feeding on human hosts, paranormal cults worshipping demonic entities, vengeful teenage sorcerers, we’ve got it all.
Did I mention the possessed toy? It’s a plastic football-sized egg that’s supposed to hatch an adorable, colorful stuffed bird when a child “feeds” it through a synchronized smartphone app. What’s actually inside is an otherworldly monstrosity that’s enticing impressionable wayward youth into murdering folks and depositing their body parts inside the egg as if it’s a hungry piggy bank to trigger the end of the world.
That’s where Dave, John, and Amy come in. They face supernatural threats so the rest of us don’t have to—and sometimes even earn a couple of bucks to so do. But between the bloody ritual sacrifices and soul-crushing nightmares, our trio realizes this apocalypse is way above their pay grade.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. A Secret Service operative and dedicated survivalist, Special Agent Del Roosevelt had a plan for every world-ending scenario and regularly trained for them all. He was even ready for a date with the hottest woman in his office next Friday. At least he hoped so. But all that training, all those rations, all that prepping? Useless for the apocalypse that actually played out. Del wakes up half-buried in a giant trash pile, missing his thumbs. And, um, covered in red fur. Another great book in this series
I love this series, and had the book preordered and grabbed the audiobook right away. Now, I’m unsure if it’s because I’m listening to the audiobook so soon after reading- my mind decided it’s own “version” of the book, but I found I didn’t enjoy the performance of this one. I found the pacing of the reading to be EXTREMELY odd, as if he didn’t read ahead. Kept trying to end sentences early, and then realizing they kept going. “The v… and h!… of the van halen logo” was one that I took note of for this review.
I don’t recall the performance being this jarring listening to the other ones he narrated for this series, but very grating to me this time!
I enjoyed the way each alternating character POV was done, he made it easy to understand the different voice of each character. And all in all I do enjoy his reading of this story! I might have to go back to book 1 and 3 to see if the pacing is similar. As I was listening to it with my girlfriend -who has not read the book- she mentioned also finding the pacing odd.
Either way- another amazing story! Even with my personal dislike of the narrator, I recommend 100%

Loved it. Jason's books always help me understand weird things about mental health and perception of the world. It's comforting to know there are plans for a 5th book. Great premise, great characters, great dialog, great narrator. Gonna go back and listen to the series from the start now.

Really enjoyed this
I normally don't read books like this but I needed a break and took a chance on it. It's the first of Pargin's books that I read and without knowing anything about it, the first few pages came off as poorly written. It soon dawned on me, however, that the style choice was deliberate and I was able to enjoy this book very much. To me it reads like a ghostbusters story interspersed with moments of clear and concise, almost philosophical, commentary on the human condition.
Despite how bizarre the scenario is, I found it easy to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the story. He spends just enough time on the visual descriptions that you can fill it in with your imagination without him wearing you down, as often happens, with too much detail. As a result, as a story it was quite strong and moved along at a good pace. I think he could have done more with the character development but like I said, I didn't read any of the stories leading up to this so I started with a deficit and found myself wanting a bit more context. The performance by the narrator was fantastic. Each of the 4 main characters has their own voice and the narrator nailed it! Well done.

if you like the series you'll like this one
John, David and Amy take on a global time traveling summoning spell. much like the other books. there's lots of interdimensional parasites and invisible monsters that only people have taken soy sauce can see. The situations are strange, and they sort of bumble through it.
Much like the other books. the performance of the very good. The take on the supernatural is interesting.
