About this listen

In this thrilling novel from bestselling author John Marrs, a young couple’s house hides terrible secrets—and not all of them are confined to the past.

Mia and Finn are busy turning a derelict house into their dream home when Mia unexpectedly falls pregnant. But just when they think the house is ready, Mia discovers a shocking message scored into a skirting board: I WILL SAVE THEM FROM THE ATTIC. Following the clue up into the eaves, the couple make a gruesome discovery: their home was once a real-life murder house, with the evidence still concealed within the four walls.

In the wake of their traumatic discovery, the baby arrives and Mia can’t shake her fixation with the monstrous crimes that happened right above them. Tormented by the terrible things she saw, she is desperate to dig into the past to find answers.

Secrecy shrouds the mystery of the attic, but when shards of a dark truth start to emerge, Mia realises the danger is terrifyingly present. She is prepared to do anything to protect her family—but will the previous tenants stop her from discovering their secret?

Complicated!

Such an intricate story that is super complex. Glad I listened to the audiobook so the different voices could help me keep track of who was talking and whose perspective it was. LOVED it

Good Performance and Interesting Book

Pros:
-interesting and convoluted story
-good performance by the voice actors
-kept me hanging on my seat and I finished it very quickly cause it was hard to stop listening to

Cons
-The biggest issue I had with it is that one of the biggest twists in the book is somewhat revealed by the gender of the narrator. I think the twist would have been more shocking if I hadn’t been able to guess the person’s gender.

Could’ve been 5 stars

This was an excellent story until about 75% of the way through when it starts getting extremely unbelievable. Mental gymnastics are required to carry on. I still liked it but it wasn’t Marrs’ best.

It was just too much for me to handle.

I love a thriller and I don’t mind hearing about some disturbing things here and there. But this was too much I had to stop. Spoiler alert for some content but not main plot: it describes the murders of children, and as a parent I couldn’t keep going.

Story itself probably was going to be really good and I loved “the one” by John Marrs, so I was disappointed.

Not his best

I've enjoyed all of John Mars' books, but this is not his best. It was predictable and the story was all over the place with no real flow. It just went on for too long for no reason. What were supposed to be "twists" just fell flat and seemed contrived.
