Publisher's Summary
Probationary constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London's Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he'll face is a paper cut. But Peter's prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter's ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny.
Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Story
Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future-allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success. But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful.

A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

Story
In 1942, Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse - mathematical genius and young Captain in the US Navy - is assigned to detachment 2702. It is an outfit so secret that only a handful of people know it exists, and some of those people have names like Churchill and Roosevelt. The mission of Watrehouse and Detachment 2702 - commanded by Marine Raider Bobby Shaftoe - is to keep the Nazis ignorant of the fact that Allied Intelligence has cracked the enemy's fabled Enigma code. In the present, Waterhouse's crypto-hacker grandson, Randy, is attempting to create a "data haven" in Southeast Asia....

Story
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Story
Necromancer is such an ugly word, but it's a title Eric Carter is stuck with. He sees ghosts, talks to the dead. He's turned it into a lucrative career, putting troublesome spirits to rest, sometimes taking on even more dangerous things. For a fee, of course. When he left LA 15 years ago, he thought he'd never go back. Too many bad memories. Too many people trying to kill him.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Magical Police Procedural-truly excellent narrator
I was told if I like Good Omens or Neverwhere I would like this series. A modern day British police procedural with a healthy dash of otherwordlyness did appeal, but what made this truly outstanding is the narrator. Also, the book is steeped in the history of London (I cannot be the only person that ended up wiki'ing the London river tributories!) Having finished this book I immediately downloaded book two.

Loved the Story and Narration
Narrator Kobna has such a warm, soothing tone. He does different characters so well!
The different "English" dialects are well presented. You can just feel yourself traveling around London visiting all the haunts; yes a pun intended! All in all a marvelous listen.

Really good urban fantasy
A light listen. Original story that unfolds neatly. Exceptionnal narration (though you have to get used to heavy breathing ; it was made in 2013, i.e. not the golden age of audiobooks).

Fantastical police work and irreverent humour
l loved it so much. The story matches my quiky sense of humour. Had this book in my library for months then decided it was time. So glad I listened. Narrator is utterly fabulous, really one of the best so far, I think, and the story is an odd mix of history, ghost hunting, magic and crime solving.
Now, it is from the point of view of a single young man, so internal dialogue is sometimes left of centre, but overall well balanced with wit, laziness, curiosity and action when it counts.

Remarkable narrative steel
Story itself is only superseded by the skill of the narrator and using so many different colloquial British accents for each character. Really quite remarkable.

The story was interesting, but the audible breath taking of the narrator distracting. i won't get the 2nd book if the breathing is the same in the sample.

Excellent! Loved every minute.
I have just finished the second audiobook in the series. I love the series & the narrator as well. If you like a little bit of magic and fantasy mixed in with your British crime then I would absolutely suggest you give this book a try! Kind of reminds me of Charles De Lint a little bit, where there's a whole other magical world right under our noses.
