Publisher's Summary

Probationary constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London's Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he'll face is a paper cut. But Peter's prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter's ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny.

Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Kobna holbrook-smith makes this book

I have now listened to this title twice now. Very unusual for me. I love Kobna's voice. It is warm and comfy. He does a great job personalizing all his characters male or female. This story though..chock full of magic and surreal beings took some getting used to. Did I buy it ? Sadly no, It was just too inconceivable . However the narrator moved me through it , to the point where I just used a credit to buy book 2

The story was interesting, but the audible breath taking of the narrator distracting. i won't get the 2nd book if the breathing is the same in the sample.

Excellent! Loved every minute.

I have just finished the second audiobook in the series. I love the series & the narrator as well. If you like a little bit of magic and fantasy mixed in with your British crime then I would absolutely suggest you give this book a try! Kind of reminds me of Charles De Lint a little bit, where there's a whole other magical world right under our noses.

Weirdly Wonderful!

It’s difficult to describe this book. I found myself entranced and needing to catch every word. It’s both funny and spooky, fascinating really. Quite a blend! So much interesting historical information too. The narrator did an incredible job of bringing the story to life, the characters all strong individuals and succinctly expressed. I’ll be listening to the next book…and, most likely, the rest!

Really good urban fantasy

A light listen. Original story that unfolds neatly. Exceptionnal narration (though you have to get used to heavy breathing ; it was made in 2013, i.e. not the golden age of audiobooks).

Quite a lot of fun.

I don't usually go for magicky stuff, but this does a good job of making it both amusing and engaging. The dialogue and the hero are both charming, The detailed siting in London made me want to read it with a nice map in hand. The reader, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, was splendid. I will never stop being amazed at the talent of these people who can reliably do multiple recognizable voices for characters of all ages, genders, and conditions. I am not an expert in regional Brit accents, but I do have some little experience, and these sounded great to me.

Remarkable narrative steel

Story itself is only superseded by the skill of the narrator and using so many different colloquial British accents for each character. Really quite remarkable.

Book and narrator both amazing

London mystery novel with a sci fi twist. Really liked this book and was glad to find out there are many more in the series. Narrator is also fantastic.
