About this listen

Alfie Bell is . . . fine. He's got a six-figure salary, a penthouse in Canary Wharf, the car he swore he'd buy when he was 18, and a bunch of fancy London friends.

It's rough, though, going back to South Shields now that they all know he's a fully paid-up pansy. It's the last place he's expecting to pull. But Fen's gorgeous, with his pink-tipped hair and hipster glasses, full of the sort of courage Alfie's never had. It should be a one-night thing, but Alfie hasn't met anyone like Fen before.

Except he has. At school, when Alfie was everything he was supposed to be, and Fen was the stubborn little gay boy who wouldn't keep his head down. And now it's a proper mess: Fen might have slept with Alfie, but he'll probably never forgive him, and Fen's got all this other stuff going on anyway, with his mam and her flower shop and the life he left down south.

Alfie just wants to make it right. But how can he, when all they've got in common is the nowhere town they both ran away from.

Contains mature themes.

The narration on this one was so good it gave me chills. I enjoyed this book when I read it but it was even better in audiobook format.

love this one

I love these Spires stories. There seems to be a huge depth of feeling behind them all. But Panies is also very funny.

I can't say enough good things about this story. it was so wholesome and heart warming 💓 loved every second. The excellent narration makes it even better, if at all possible

wonderful, poetic writing and a story with heart

this story was perfection; complex and beautiful. it is explicit, but would be just as good without all that. the story has heart, and has a pacing and backstory that allows its protagonists to bloom.

the beautiful language and metaphors… i would be thinking “hm. that’s a bit overwrought”, but no! the author always sticks the landing and the metaphors, threading through the landscape and small town culture, and the characters’ journeys that mesh into something brilliant and lovely. i adore these two characters; they seemed so real to me.

the voice actor is wonderful.

Beautiful slow MM, romance

3.5 Blue Roses
4 Blue Flames

Narrator Cornell Collins delivered a beautiful MM romance with scarcely injected funny scenes. Although, the narrator did a decent job of it, I found it O’,,, so,,, fucking,,, s-l-o-w! The whole love story about a high school bully, who grows up to be a successful investment banker, leaves the city to go back to his home town for a wedding. Then, runs into the boy he bullied, but the boy is now a beautiful young man, and although they just fucked, he still doesn’t recognize him. OMG!, this was painful, I wanted to DNF so many times, but continuously motivated myself to hang in there, it may get better.

Cornell Collins tells the story perfectly, his ability to change his voice for the different characters, created an enjoyable experience. Their voices were distinguishable and easy to listen to. The cadence of his voice is very unique and I constantly had to shake my head and concentrate. Telling myself, this is not dragons and elves speaking. I am sure it happens to other listeners as well. No, it’s not the Dragon fucking the Fen, it’s Alfie, not the elf. God, I was enjoying that more, confusing and re-organizing myself. I am funny that way, am I not?

The plot was predictable and dragging. When the end appeared in the horizon, I felt as thankful as a 1000 year old vampire seeing the sunrise again. I truly expected more from the author. I loved the third book in this series, and kind of expected it to be the same.

If you were lazy, vegging out at the beach, this is the book to listen to. It may warm the insides a little, but since the sun is baking you from the outside and if you haven’t heard it all,, yet, then this may be a much better experience for you as it was for me.

Happy Listening
