Story
You’d never know what secrets the house on Hogarth Street holds - what’s happening, right this second, behind closed doors. An emerald-green front lawn. Perfectly trimmed hedging. An ivy-covered front gate and the scent of honeysuckle in the air. In the yard, two scooters lie on the grass. One blue, one pink, belonging to five-year-old twins.

Great story
The story is great, but the narrator kept taking an audible breath before starting to read, and it takes away from the story, it was a little annoying.

A bit dated
This was an enjoyable book, but it is clearly a reflection of the time in which it was written; it’s a nice throwback to a simpler time, technologically, but there are other aspects that make it a little cringeworthy, especially all the smoking references, and providing alcohol to a minor. It was a bit predictable, but again, this was the first novel, and I look forward to carrying on in the series.

Great story, kept me interested
I enjoyed the characters, wingo, Marino, dr K. Liked how the story ended. I also like the little bit of medical references in the autopsies. Decent read, I’ll try the next book while it’s free

Dated but okay
I didn’t realize when I selected the book that it was written in 1990. References to technology was so old it made me laugh. Story in general was interesting enough and the performance was good. I will pay attention to when books were written, going forward.

What Awful Oration
I really like Patricia Cornwall and have read all her work. I thought I would listen to the Scarpetta series. I probably will not make it through this one. You can hear EVERY breath the narrator takes. Drives me crazy!! If you cannot stand to listen to people breathing, skip this one!

Love a good Kay Scarpetta story!
This was the first Scarpetta book I read when it was first published. I had forgotten what a great writer Patricia Cornwell is. She tells a terrific story full of delicious details of forensics and police work. Kudos to the narrator for an excellent reading. Makes me want to read more.

A fan of Patricia Cornwall
I enjoyed the story’s plots and characters with just the right amount of clues and possible bad guys. I’m not fan of Marino’s voice and accent.
