About this listen
This program is read by the author.
A guide to all kinds of addiction from a star who has struggled with heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food, and eBay, that will help addicts and their loved ones make the first steps into recovery.
"This manual for self-realization comes not from a mountain but from the mud.... My qualification is not that I am better than you but I am worse." (Russell Brand)
With a rare mix of honesty, humor, and compassion, comedian and movie star Russell Brand mines his own wild story and shares the advice and wisdom he has gained through his 14 years of recovery. Brand speaks to those suffering along the full spectrum of addiction - from drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar addictions to addictions to work, stress, bad relationships, digital media, and fame. Brand understands that addiction can take many shapes and sizes and how the process of staying clean, sane, and unhooked is a daily activity. He believes that the question is not "why are you addicted?" but "what pain is your addiction masking? Why are you running - into the wrong job, the wrong life, the wrong person's arms?"
Russell has been in all the 12-step fellowships going, he's started his own men's group, he's a therapy regular and a practiced yogi - and while he's worked on this material as part of his comedy and previous best sellers, he's never before shared the tools that really took him out of it, that keep him clean and clear. Here he provides not only a recovery plan but an attempt to make sense of the ailing world.

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Story
Step 1: You admit that you're powerless over your addiction. Now what? Twelve-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) have helped countless people on the path to recovery. But many still feel that 12-step programs aren't for them: that the spiritual emphasis is too narrow, the modality too old-school, the setting too triggering, or the space too exclusive. Some struggle with an addict label that can eclipse the histories, traumas, and experiences that feed into addiction, or dismisses the effects of adverse experiences like trauma in the first place.

Editorial Review
Take a journey into the world of addiction and ultimate reflection and recovery in this unabridged audiobook written and narrated by Russell Brand. Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions is a poignant account of Russell Brand’s personal experiences with a plethora of addictions, from drugs to shopping and the tools that empowered him in his recovery. From traditional twelve-step recovery programs like alcoholics anonymous, therapy and yoga to his ultimate understanding of what causes addiction, Russell Brand does not shy away from bearing it all to help others on their paths to recovery in this audiobook. Brand’s humour, honesty, and empathy take listeners on a journey that is both eye-opening and full of inspiration.
Recovery is not a typical self-help book. Instead, it is an examination and, ultimately, the understanding of the roots of addiction. What pain are you trying to conceal with your substance abuse? What holes are you trying to fill with your shopping addiction? What traumas and triggers keep you running into the wrong person’s arms? Russell Brand has done the hard work of uncovering the many reasons people use social media, food, and toxic relationships to soothe parts of them that need healing unknowingly.
Russell Brand has written multiple best-sellers, but he has never revealed the strategies and tools that transformed his life of addiction quite like this. The Recovery audiobook from Macmillan Audio is a must-listen for anyone grappling with addiction and their family members looking for ways to help and understand the people they love, the compelling customer reviews are proof of its impact. Russell Brand not only gives listeners a plan for their recovery that goes beyond recommending a twelve-step program but also gives them insights that make understanding the world around them a little less overwhelming.

Honest and moving
This is the type of book I listen to over and over. Brand's style is raucous and witty, and the honesty with which he shares his life experience is unforgettable. He really knows what recovering from addiction is all about, and I think this work will help millions. I agree with him that addiction shows up in one way or another for all of us, be it with food, TV, video games, drugs, unhealthy relationships, you name it. This book can really be a life changer. #Audible1

Profound, not just on Step One, but all the Steps!
Sometimes I will speed up an Audible author a little bit, but here is a book where I actually had to slow the author down. He talks so fast, and he is so sharp and insightful, that a slower speed is essential for complete absorption of the life-altering materials. He makes the 12 steps of recovery apply to many, many kinds of trauma and addiction and self-mortification. The amount of self-awareness, even while affirming that self-awareness is ultimately of no assistance, is riveting. He is also willing to use very fresh language in going over all the old ground. This book is worth listening to many times, because at different times of a listener's personal growth in the Steps, various chapters will speak louder than others. I highly recommend this book, even to people who do not experience addiction issues themselves. The benefits are life-long.

Eye opening!
This book was amazing. By chapter 2 I had identified so much of myself in what Russell was saying. I immediately began self-reflecting nd noticed a big change in my attitude (mostly at work). I'm not an addict in the normal sense but I definitely have addict-like tendencies which come along with the mental disorder I have been trying (nd mostly failing) to maintain all by my lonesome.
I fully intend to immerse myself in some parts, if not all, of this program nd see if I can't find some light at the end of this perpetually dark tunnel. I have always enjoyed Russell's humour nd his wonderful accent nd hearing his version of these 12 Steps (which I was familiar with prior to listening), nd his personal stories, made things clearer for me as I am far from religious nd not at all spiritual.
I recommend this book to anyone who may be struggling with life, not just addiction, but ALL the things life may throw our way. There's no better person than Russell to start this journey with as he can make the bleakest thing comedic nd yet still have you rethinking your own path. I plan on purchasing the physical copy as well so I can desecrate it with highlighters.

I liked everything about this publication. I would suggest anyone struggling should read this book from newcomer-oldtimer. I have been clean for 20 years, and this book made me realize a lot needs to change about my program. I actually listened to the audio book, my first audio book ever, i was skeptical about audio books, and this played over my home stereo beautifully. I really enjoyed Russell’s delivery.

Russell's honest brash nature is well suited for an introduction to the 12 step program. humour and charisma keep the reader interested in learning more which is really valuable for a book that's intended audience is going through crisis. the program works if you work it,
